Hi all,

My move to NYC has crept up on me - 7 weeks and counting .

This time next week dc's and I'll be in DC for half term week .

One quick question - will my UK electricals work in the US (hoover, food processor, iron etc) or do I need to buy new ones when I get there?

Thank you Califrau! I'm going to be in an apartment which already has a washer and dryer (very unusual I'm told). My microwave, food processor etc are ancient and can either go into storage at this end or get dumped, and I can look forward to going shopping for new stuff . I'll also see if the person I'm replacing has any stuff he wants to off-load.

You sound like dh - he sends his laundry over the road, so doesn't wash or iron, has rugs and floorboards so doesn't hoover, and has a stove top kettle. He usually eats his main meal during the day in the office canteen, and appears to live off pasta, pesto and jars of alfredo sauce when at home. He doesn't microwave, and only bought a toaster - from Safeways - when I discovered the oven and grill didn't work when I visited him three months after he arrived . His only major electrical purchase has been a hideous huge flat screen TV (which he had been wanting in the UK but I veto'd) and a DVD player.

We will be coming back to the UK at some point, so I will hang on to the bits I think I might need again.

One more q, as you seem to be a keen chef, are there places I can get gluten free ingredients? Ds1 is coeliac and gets basic stuff on prescription here. I found some (v pricey) things in wholefoods last time, but was wondering if there were any other options.

Wow, that blog is fantastic! Thank you so much. Great to know ds2 can eat Italian in NYC - it's his birthday soon after we arrive so we can take him out. I will also check out the DC listings for next week.

I didn't find anything in Safeway last time, but the one dh uses is only a small one close to his apartment. Maybe I should try going further afield to find a bigger branch.

What do you use instead of fructose? Is it like gluten, in that it pops up everywhere, even when you least expect it? Ds2 also has type 1 diabetes and I was amazed at how much hidden sugar there was in everyday foods (am still regaling people about the carton of chicken stock which according to the ingredients list contained cane sugar - why????)

SuperBunny · 08/02/2009 17:26

What a great blog! This one may help too, but I don't know if they are based in New York - she has lots of good recipes but you may find info on where to buy things (I haven't looked). Whole Foods deffo best for special ingredients - they have a bulk section and you might be able to get some things in that bit cheaper than buying prepackaged. I am SURE that in NYC, there are plenty of health food type stores that will stock gluten-free things.

Also, look on Fresh Direct for grocery deliveries in the city. They probably sell gluten-free things but they might be $$$$$

Dyson Mine is still in the uk.

Cali, can you not eat LDC then? Lemons must contain fructose.

Most apartments have microwaves in above the stove so you may not need to buy one.

dooney, dh will be on his own quite a bit with the boys as I will be in conference while we're there. Any ideas of things to do?

Cali, does Tom's of Maine toothpaste have it in there?

tangarine · 08/02/2009 21:53

Ooh Superbunny, thank you, some nice lookng recipes on there.

Califrau, I spoke to dh tonight who said that his local Safeway do now have a gf section, so that is good news. Your fructose intolerance sounds really hard to shop for - and I thought gf was bad enough. At least in the UK the allergen labelling is getting better all the time. Although I did find it less clear in the US last time I guess it will just be a case of learning where to look on the label and what to look for. I'd already been warned about the HFCS and the likely impact on ds1's blood sugar levels and insulin needs, but how horrible that it's everywhere and you can't have it.

tangarine · 08/02/2009 21:56

Sorry Jabberwocky for not picking up your post, I do seem to remember seeing a built in microwave in my apartment. Dh's is a 1950's period piece with original fixtures and fittings and definitely does not have one . I'm going up to NYC for a day and a night next week, leaving the kids in DC with dh, and will be staying in my apartment-to-be with the colleagues who live there now, so will be able to check it out properly.

Gosh Cali, must be tricky finding anything you can eat. Hasn't California passed a rule about HFCS? Or are they just thinking about banning it? I don't know why American food comanies insist on adding junk to everything. Pisses me right off and I don't even have any dietary issues.
