Nope sorry only been on hoilday.I have a friend who moved there from NYC for various reasons and love the beach lifestyle. Not much help I'm afraid.

Maveta · 12/01/2009 08:48

thanks - guess everyone who lives there is too busy enjoying the beach lifestyle to be on MN!

I haven't lived there but spent long periods of time there and am considering applying for a job there. Are you planning on moving there?

Maveta · 12/01/2009 09:50

There is a vague possibility of a job there, it's all still very up in the air but it's hard to know whether I am interested or not without knowing the place. My instinct is to go for it but just wanted to see what other people's actual experience was. You like it then?

I love it. It's a fabulous place. Although very 'consumerist' (is that a word?). It's also full of beautiful people. I used to spend a lot of time there in my twenties. Now, in my thirties, one baby later and a bit (ahem) saggy all around, I wonder whether I might find it a bit more intimidating. But there so much to like. It's a lifestyle which really appeals to me - outdoors all the time and lots of diving etc. I also like the south american influence and want to use my spanish more.

Have you ever visited?

Maveta · 12/01/2009 10:51

No, never visited.. lived in the states for a few years as a kid but very small town america. We live in spain (spanish dh) so the South Am. aspect is great in that respect though whenever we've daydreamed of living somewhere else it's been to a colder climate so Miami doesn't really fit!

Still, loads of people seem to love the place so it must have something...

In my experience, Miami is unlike anywhere else in the States. I'd suggest, if you are seriously considering it, that you fly over for a short break. It's a big decision to make without knowing the place at all.

Maveta · 12/01/2009 12:20

yeah I agree.. but don't have the money for that just lying around. Basically my boss is deliberating opening an office out there and if I want to go, the job is mine. But I am not sure how much he is prepared to shell out to get me there iykwim?

All food for thought..

Did you go to Miami, Maveta? We are moving there for six months later this year with my husband's work. Our children are 5 & 8 so would have to enrol in schools, etc and I should be able to work from home. Any advice?

Alouiseg · 05/03/2010 20:01

I would live there in a heartbeat, we had a week on South Beach with Dh and Dc. It was so amazing Dh and I went back with mates for my 40th. I know living somewhere is a huge difference to holidaying there but I loved it.

Tolalola · 10/03/2010 12:36

I lived in Miami for 4 years in the 1990s, and I loved it. There are a ton of different cultures - loads of Haitians and Cubans especially, fab food and music and loads of outdoor things to do. Don't know if I would enjoy it as much with children, I associate it with a great place to be young and single, but maybe just cos that's when I was there, iyswim.

Thanks. It looks like we'll be moving to Miami Beach for 4-6 months this autumn. I've looked at the websites for the schools in Mid and South Beach and they look pretty good. As we're not going long-term, we'll just make the most of everything there is to see and do and try not to worry too much about the less child-friendly aspects of Miami live. If anyone has lived there with kids it would be great to hear what they think.
