Has anyone moved from London to Johannesburg?

It looks like we are going the beginning of April (yet to be confirmed re DH's contract etc).

We are fairly well organised but I'm already stressed.

Does anyone have any tips for me that will calm me down and help make the move go smoothly?

For example, what should I look for in a removal company? How the hell do I decrease the junk we've accumulated over the years? Any tips on looking for a rental agent for our house here?

Also, how can I prep my DD (aged 7) for the South African schooling system?

Many thanks!

Hi there Meid!

I've just moved from Joburg to the UK and can help a bit I think... when we came over we used Pickfords and they were fine, packed reasonably well, only 3 things missing when we arrived which is not too bad!

Rental agents will vary depending on where you are I would imagine but I can highly recommend Christie's of Leatherhead if you're in Surrey.

Re the schooling system - my first DC is due in April so can't say from personal experience of putting a child in there BUT from being schooled there myself, chatting to other friends and family who've done the move (both ways!) the schools in RSA are very good - quite sporty, very academic if you're going private but a great extramural social life too. Do you know what school you're going to be at? And where you're going to live? I have a few contacts in the northern suburbs that I can put you in touch with if you need a cup of tea...

Let me know if you need more info - you can email me on catherefresen at gmail dot com for a chat of you like!
