For those of you living overseas, are you there for YOUR job or your DH/DP's job?

DH follows me and I seem to be in a minority everywhere we go, so curious to see if anyone else is in the same boat?

And for those of you who follow, do you work outside the home overseas, paid, unpaid, in lucrative position or for a charity? And how easy is it to get this kind of work?

my job, but am lone parent so have no dh.

I'm in Saudi Arabia for my DH's job, not mine!
sadly no call for female divorce lawyers in Saudi so am now a SAHM!

I am in Budapest for DH's job. He is an accountant - I was a secretary when we met. have followed him around for years now!

You would be in a minority here to MrsS. I know of 2 families here where the wife is the career person.

I'm in Germany for Dh's job. Mine back home was in magazine publishing but paid a pittance.
We'd never survive on publishing salaries.

I came to Paris way back, in 1992, because of MY job (leaving then boyfriend behind in the UK). I have changed job several times in the years since then.

I met my DP through work (we were both alumni of the same firm). Quite possibly I might no longer be here today if it weren't for him, and he cannot move at present as the boys are entering the critical phase of education and need to be here, and to have him around.

DH works for one of the large accountancy firms. They have offices all over the world. We have been in Thailand, Vietnam, Bulgaria and now here. Why? Because DH likes travelling and working in different countries.

When we moved to Thailand the top tier of management were expats - now I think they are all Thai. When we were in Vietnam again the top tier were expats but now enough Vietnamese have come up through the ranks and there are a lot more in management. Same in Bulgaria. Here in Hungary top management are expats. Both Hungary and Bulgaria are run as part of Central and Eastern Europe. Lots of local partners and expat partners.

Both! We were lucky enough to organise work together - so neither following the other.

I am about to leave my job and become a "trailing spouse" as I follow DH on secondmeent to the US. I am expecting DC3 in Jan so would be giving up work anyway for a year or so at least but must confess I am slightly anxious about officially being a fulltime sahm!

Mostly I am excited about being at home with the DCs and childcare for 3 (in UK or anywhere really) would be a serious headache but I am already finding that I am unable to arrange things like the house/ car/ bank accounts etc as visa is in his name!

The decision to move here was made because of dh's job but I knew that I would be able to get a good job here too and managed to sort that out before we moved.

Amongst my particular circle of friends here you would not be odd. I know many men who came because of their partner's jobs and they do combinations of being SAHDs, part-time working at home, working remotely, volunteering.

DH followed me overseas for my job. But he is a family man so 5 yrs later we returned to his country after he found employment there.

I followed DH's job as he was offered a great opportunity within the same firm. I did some research though and was confident I would also find a job - which i did after 2 months here. I used to earn more than DH in the UK, and now earn a lot less though. I'm just waiting for that next great opportunity to come up - in the South of France .

I came to France for DH while we were still students and found my first job here.

We moved to the UK for a bit when I found a job there and he could transfer. Then we moved back to France for family reasons.

None of the above. Here to try something new/work for ourselves/try life in a new place.

Dh and I moved (emigrated really) here for him to set up a business, he had always wanted to do so and I was happy to move here also as I have a better chance of working here because of my line of work and due to childcare arrangements etc. Saying that I am not currently working as I want to be at home with the smallest one for another year.

Here there are a great deal of joint working parents, as well as the more usual expat man with the work permit and SAHM, but also because of the large UN offices here there are plenty of women who are the main breadwinners.

None, I came here because I wanted a change and met dh here. However any future moves (he wants to go to the UK, I am resisting) would most likely be down to my job.

dh was told he had to come back to Aus to live once we started having children. He had no job and I was 18 weeks pregnant with dd2.

I moved to the UK to work ( when single and fancy free) taught high school - met dh and the rest is history as they say.

He had a job - somewhat different to what he did in the UK - he took a step down from management BUT loves it.

We're here 100% for DH's work. But luckily my company has offices everywhere and they don't actually care where I'm sitting as long as it's in the Asia-Pacific time zones, so they transferred me.
