where in the world can software developers get a job?

am bored and tired of UK, having grown up travelling the world. We're expecting our first baby this autumn so my career (as a theatre director) is likely to be on hold for a year or two - DH works in software development (currently for Sony in London) and I'm bored at work musing where we could move to!

Anyone have any ideas where he could get work in the world? I know Canada but it's a bit cold for me...anywhere else that's not north american?

Can he get an internal transfer with Sony to one of their other locations? Often quickest and esiest way with work permits...

you may well get into places like New Zealand quicker as it's the skills shortage list and you get extra points for having one of those skills - lots of companies would be desperate for him, especially with experience of working for a major multinational like Sony. Is prob the same for Australia and other places

I would try for an internal transfer with Sony if I were you. Certainly for N.A that would be the only way in. The only point I would make is that a lot of major companies are outsourcing software development to India and China - even the likes of Deloitte are doing that. So you may be better considering remaining with a large player than job hunting.

Internal transfer should be your first point of call. It is the quickest, surest and (usually) cheapest way to move abroad, unless you would be happy to move to Europe within the EU, in which case he just has to apply for a job in the normal way (no visa issues). I should warn you that immigrating (even temporarily) is very stressful, money and time consuming. I'm not sure that it should be combined with a small baby!

Singapore, especially in financial services.

But I agree, internal transfer with Sony is the best bet.

My cousin now lives in India and does something computer related (although it was her husband that got the original job out there and I'm not totally sure what he does). She seems to be enjoying it - it's certainly a change from London!

yeah think you're all right - I'm only musing as he's only just started to work for them permanently so it's not something I think we'd even be able to consider for maybe a year at least...

If he creates a linked in profile he'll probably get head hunted from overseas eventually, especially if he has the conventional range of languages and graduate education and work experience for his specialism. I also have a software engineer husband and until he deleted his profile he got unsolicited head hunters chasing him regularly - obviously a few were scams and chancers but most actually trying to fill genuine international vaccancies. If you aren't in a hurry let them come to you.

Otherwise agree an internal transfer within a global company is the easiest way all round.
