Insurance for newborn baby. Any experience how to get it straight from birth?

Lots of companies offer insurance from the point that baby is 14 days or 30 days old. I found no insurance company so far who will insure it from the beginning.

Sales guy told me that the reason for that is, that the first 2 weeks are the riskiest in a baby's life. Ahhh...duh. I mean, what's the point, such a stupid answer....

I'm in Singapore and am with Pru Health but they won't cover baby either. Has anyone of you been through this? Any tips? Thank you!

Think ours covered from birth up to about 3 months automatically with the mother, without having to have his/her own policy. CIGNA iirc

Ours was the same as Lizs, policyholder was dh and all his dependants were covered on it. Tbh I never checked if it covered a newborn and just took both babies back from the UK to Africa when they were a couple of weeks old assuming they were covered. Are you anticipating the baby to have health problems when he is first born? If so then I would not speak to the sales guy but go straight to the emergency helpline people and explain and see what they can do.

I had private health insurance when my sons were born and after each birth the baby had to be added separately to the policy. As soon as we weren't living in the same body anymore then they were considered people from me and the insurance company would treat them that way! Come to think of it the airlines had the same reaction when I wanted to fly with my newborn...

No, not expecting problems with newborn, but am having a c-section due to cyst and another couple here who had the same 'birth', their son then spent 12 days in emergency unit due to breathing problems and it cost them about £5k as the LO wasn't insured then. Of course, we'd prepared to pay anything, to care for the baby should problems arise, I'd just rather be on the safe side and insure her.

Yes quinne, that's my problem exactly. My insurance comp sees it the same way and won't insure the baby as soon as it leaves the womb.

Another thing to watch for is exclusions - our policy in theory covered them automatically from birth but excluded anything congenital (ie there at birth) which isn't much help

ditto the exclusions bit.. of ds was found to have hydrocephalus ante nataly and as a result is nearly uninsurable at the moment! fortunately medicare cover him here! ( or we would need to be finding two mortgages!)

Barbados, I didn't know they could exclude things like this. I guess I'll have to get used to this sort of stuff.

I guess I have to give up on searching for a medical cover and bite into the sour apple of probability. IF something happens, then we have to cough up the cash.
