I just finished the old thread by accident

What about devils on horseback? They are prunes wrapped with bacon, on a bit of toast. It's one of the few recipes I know that uses streaky bacon, and I think is authentically British. My mother used to do angels on horseback too, when they have cods roe in the middle, but I've yet to see cods roe here in the States. It's dead easy to do, just soak the prunes, or use ready to eat (stoned) ones, wrap in a bit of bacon place on toast (you don't have to use toast, then they are just devils, I think) and grill. They are for cocktail parties really, so maybe would go with the Joyce Grenfall thing?

On another subject completely: can anyone tell me about 'chigger' bites (not sure about spelling)? How can a person know if they've got mosquito bites or chigger bites? Dd's got about 2 dozen on her torso, and I'm wondering what, if anything, should be done about them...

YY cheese and onion pasties

Sausages on sticks, cheese and pineapple? Not very sophosicated, I know but quite british if you are 6

Oh yes, sausages on sticks won't work with US sausages, will it? Um...

I don't really know what Brits eat that fits the bill. I'd have gone with the sarnies, I think.

I have have a tube of squeazey Branston sandwich pickle that would be perfect. I doubt you want my half-used tube though. Can you get someone to send you one? If you have Meijer nr you they sell things like that. Maybe even World Market? Ali might know.

My English recipe book has a Stilton and grape pastry recipe, which you could do wit a different blue cheese, although the Stilton is what makes it English, I guess. Is the party finger foods only? Roast beef would be very English - what about steak rolls with horseradish (might be expensive though!). My cook books are also heavily French/Italian flavoured!

You can't get much more rahrah Henley than Marlow. Unless you are in Henley. Deffo sandwiches.

Hi UR. No it needs to be rock salt . Only that has big enough pieces which is what you need to chill the cream sufficiently enough to freeze. Sea salt won't work. Make sure you have a very very strong ziploc bag. I found mine in Safeway (Kosher .). Hope everyone's had a great weekend. Gone way too fast as usual.

JJ · 28/07/2008 04:42

Chiggers are red bugs, not that that helps you. Chigger info page here

I put an antihistimine cream on the bite or calamine lotion and give an oral antihistimine if necessary. It's like a mosquito bite, except that chiggers don't carry any diseases! They tend to bite around places where clothing grips into the skin - so under sock elastic and underwear elastic.

UnderRated · 28/07/2008 04:55

JJ, where are you?

I think we do not have chiggers round these parts. I'll get bitten by them tomorrow now, won't I?

Earlybird · 28/07/2008 05:07

JJ - thanks for that info. DD played in a friend's back garden on Friday afternoon, and outside at a birthday party yesterday. Luckily she doesn't seem too miserable, but she really got bitten - especially in areas where knickers grip, just as you say.

Interesting that the clear nail polish treatment isn't effective, as that is what every local person has advised.

mananny · 28/07/2008 05:27

I just got back from seeing George Michael live and have three things to say:

  1. that man can sing and dance at the same time without breaking a sweat
  2. there are some beautiful men out there, that can also sing and dance without breaking a sweat
  3. I cannot sing and dance without breaking a sweat

I'm a sweaty mess but it was such cheesy fun!!!!!

As for the trip, it went well nothing to report really other than there was no running for the hills and life is to carry on as before, and should anything "happen" well then that bridge will be crossed then.

JJ · 28/07/2008 13:33

I'll bet that the clear nail polish makes it feel better and more difficult to scratch - even if it doesn't work how they think it does (ie there's no red bug to smother).

I'm in NE Alabama on Lookout Mountain. UR, you have definitely doomed yourself to a summer of chigger bites! No, just joking. I used to live in Chicago (have just see The List below, am not a stalker, promise) and never had one there. Even with a very overgrown garden.

Can someone please say "There, there, it'll be better today" to me here? And I've most likely got poisonous spiders in my house although I've never been bitten in the 35+ years I've been coming here. Still.

JJ · 28/07/2008 13:35

And I would love to go see George Michael - it sounds like a blast.

I'm sorry I haven't read the whole thread. I tried but was a bit jittery last night and now have to find my boys as it's completely quiet in the house which is just wrong.

UnderRated · 28/07/2008 14:13

George Michael

Glad trip went well.

JJ, hope your boys were not up to mischeif. I always worry when everything goes quiet. Lookout Mountain is such a cool name. I've never been to Alabama. Or anywhere South for that matter (except Florida but I don't know if that counts)

Off to beach to dig big hole for DS

OP posts:
Earlybird · 28/07/2008 18:15

JJ - do you live on Lookout Mountain, or just there for a summer break? Don't like the sound of poisonous spiders, AT ALL!

DD is at daycamp today, and they called to ask if it was OK to put calamine lotion on the bites. Poor child must be struggling with itching today, though she was fine when I dropped her off.

Fires in Yosemite

No-one is there, are they?

dooneygirl · 28/07/2008 19:53

Where have you been JJ?????? It has been a forever since I've talked to you.

Wish I could help you with your recipe thing, Cali. I am an addict, but don't "do" British as I don't do anything that requires translation.

jabberwocky · 28/07/2008 20:11

earlybird, get some chigger-rid. It's like clear nail polish. Really helps, chiggers itch like crazy!

Earlybird · 28/07/2008 20:22

Thanks for the tip Jabber - can I get it at Walgreen's?

Hope your new life is going well, btw. I think of you everytime I drive by our lunchtime restaurant, or by your old Interstate exit.

jabberwocky · 28/07/2008 20:45

yes, you should be able to find it there.

I'm very glad to be back home. Unfortunately there are still many of hte same issues with dh. He is happier being back near his friends but...well, you know.

dooneygirl · 28/07/2008 20:54

Hey, Earlybird, I asked DH if he could check, and he says that it shows in the system it has been taken off the shelves. I guess it was recalled or something, he can't really tell.
