south African mums - dh is off to Johannesburg, Pretoria today, where can he get biltong?

I'm just drooling even thinking about it. Dh has never had it before and doesn't know where to get it. He's a bit wary of going off the beaten track at all. Can you just buy it in any big dept store say or do you need to go to a butchers/delicatessan?

you can get it just about anywhere, most of the supermarkets - he'll even be able to pick it up at a reasonable pricce at the airport.

oh great. Is there anything you need to look for, any special brand? I used to get it as a dc but I have never had it since.

Woolworths (as in the SA version). Chilli biltong sticks. Yum!

Plenty at Jo-burg airport. I prefer the chunks of meat as opposed to the "chips" or the sticks. ....Although I would still mamange to force down som echips or sticks if offered!

If he does buy it at a butcher etc, get him to put it in a vacumn pack so that he can bring it through customs ... I would ask him to get game as well (e.g. ostrich, buck etc - rather than cow etc ....)no brand, any any supermarket (woolworths, pick n pay, good butcher will have some great stuff!!!!)

oh and while he is in a supermarket dont forget the peppermint crisps!!!!!

Kudu (or other game) is my favourite biltong. I like it quite dry too, so you have to work at chewing it! That's why I'm not so keen on the "chips": far too easy to eat!

You do know there are a couple of really good places you can get Biltong in the UK too don't you??

i got a friend to bring over a large packet of fizz bars for my dd's birthday party - the ex south african kids went mad for them, and i snuck in a green one and a pink one for old times sake!

There is also a melissa's (deli) at jhb airport, they sell the greatest rusks, and all sorts of jams etc ... i normally get guests to bring over melissa's stuff for me!

The irony is - kudu is my favourite buck to see in the Kruger!

My mum and dad are going back out to SA in September: I'll have to get them to bring me back supplies of peppermint crisps and biltong!

Just thought of something else SA that you can't get over here that Ilke: Stoneys Ginger Beer.

None of the ginger beers here quite vcut the mustard: Stoneys really is like homemade stuff!

There is/was an SA store at London Bridge station where I would occasionally treat myslef to a peppermint crisp (or three ) - but I no longer go to see the cusotmer I had around the corner, so don't have the excsue to go to that corner of London.

Well way back when we used to get it, it was just chunks of very dry mouth-wateringly good meat. I have lusted after it for years. Didn't know they made crisps and sticks of it even. Will have to call dh again and elaborate so he doesn't get confused and bring the wrong stuff.

He has promised to buy tons of it. Good idea krugerpark with the vacumn pack. I'll tell him to get the people there to help him buy it at a butchers then.

So they would ship to Germany (probably not cheap - especially given that they're not a cheap shop anyhow lol) - but at least it's available

Thanks FAQ. Well since you mentioned them shipping to here, I thought I'd google Biltong and see what came up and OMG they've just opened a South African Wine and Biltong shop here!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good stuff. I'm going there tomorrow! I've asked for years you know at delicatessan type shops and food halls in the big dept stores etc and only ever drawn a blank. No one had even HEARD of biltong.

cool (and if the biltong is crap at least know you know there's an option to have some good stuff shipped to you - not cheaper - but would be cheaper than flying to SA and getting more LOL)

unfortunately the shop has closed down again already! Wah wah.... was only open for about 6 months in all it seems.

Well h passed the biltong test and brought back spring bok, kudu and beef My favourite is spring bok. He didn't bring back ENOUGH though

Well anyway it was nice that he loved SA. He is always funny about Africa and running it down (never having been there) so I was glad to see now he knows what I'm talking about. He was all, "oh the people are SO nice there" (well yes EXACTLY), "no, no they're REALLY nice" (yes, I know, I have been telling you that for 8 years) and the sky is so blue, the music so beautiful, the meat is so good, the wine is delicious, everything in fact is fantastic. So all round it was a successful trip and opened his eyes a bit. He knew about the bad sides beforehand but now he sees what I mean when I tell him about the good sides.

yay - glad you got your Biltong - and that your DH has had his eyes opened about SA
