My parents have been retired in France for many years, and have quite a complicated financial setup, with UK pensions, French pensions, and property rental. They are getting elderly, and struggling with tax returns.
I've always lived in the UK, so I have limited understanding of French taxes. We do all speak French. I tried to help last year, but French tax forms are horrific and something got lost on the form - not a large amount, but stressful for my parents.
I'd like to hire some kind of Financial professional to do next years return for them.
I'd also like them to look at where my parents have their money, and make sure that it is working for them. Given their age, I don't think they need investment portfolio management - but just simple things like getting money into the right bank account (they have a lot in low interest current accounts). I think it needs an overhaul, and that would feel less personal coming from a professional than from me! (My parents are very open to me helping... but still, they're my parents!)
This overhaul should also bear inheritance planning in mind, and ideally I'd want them to eventually help me with dealing with the IHT taxes etc when that horrible eventuality comes.
Given that the family are in 2 different countries and my parents have a complicated set up, I think it needs to be a company which is specialised in France but also knows how to deal with the UK. When one parent dies, the other may come back to the UK - and again, we'd want advice for that.
Language isn’t really a problem. English is easier for me, but we would all be fine in French.
What kind of professional do I need? It seems like a mix of an Accountant (tax return help is the immediate thing) and some kind of Financial advisor - although as I say, I think it's more a basic overhaul than portfolio management.
What's the search term, and how do I find a good one? Any recommendations would be really appreciated, but the main thing is to know what I'm looking for!
