Anyone live in Phoenix?

DS is heading to Arizona state university in January to study. He has been advised that he'll need a car. He's fortunate enough to have money in the bank to buy a cheap car.
Looking for advice on where to look when he arrives. He doesn't want to spend much more than £2k. Can anyone help please?

He can figure it out when he gets there. Americans, especially ones from the southwest are friendly and helpful. And of course people at his uni will help him out. If I were you I would let him solve this by himself. If he can study abroad he is capable of doing this. Untie the apronstrings, OP.

I've never lived in Phoenix (guess where I grew up) but it will all fall into place for him. Friends and university contacts (is there an Office for Foreign/Exchange Students type thing?) will guide him. In my day there were want ads in the local newspapers with cars for sale. All that will be online now but, being a young 'un, he'll figure it out.

As I remember it, the trickiest part, even for Americans, is the driving license-insurance-car triangle: there's a chicken and egg aspect to it because things have to be done in the right order. But the university should have people who can advise.
