What would you call a Special Needs Learning Support Assistant in French? Specifically, a person who works one-to-one with a child with SN in school and adapts learning and social experiences to meet their needs, as well as carrying out interventions and extension activities.

Could this be what you are looking for?

accompagnant d'élève en situation de handicap (AESH)

GazeboLantern · 28/08/2024 06:38

Yes, I think that's it. How is it said - in full words, in initials, or as an acronym?

Is there a difference between élève en situation de handicap and élève avec besoins speciaux? My French is just about good enough to fumble my way through most websites, but I don't pick up any subtleties or nuances.

Merci beacoup!

Hi, Not something I know à great deal about so hopefully someone more in the know will come along later but I don't think 'des besoins spéciaux' exists as such in France.

I think all special needs come under the banner of 'handicapés' I have a friend who works as an accompagnant and she supports 2 young people with autisme in mainstream education.

If your child doesn't have a diagnosed disability you could try the words 'besoins éducatif particuliers'.

Wishing you the best of luck, my daughter had a few problems with writing when she was younger and getting help was very slow (although excellent once we got it!).

Also, you might already know this depending where you are in the system but one thing I didn't réalise until I had wasted à year waiting for the school to refer my daughter was that schools don't refer, doctors do! It is considered à medical issue rather than educational! No one told me this, it was just assumed I knew.
