Please tell me that I have landed in the twilight zone and that it won't cost me and the family (DH and 3 kids) AU$11000!!! to fly back to the UK for a holiday.

It's not April 1st is it?

sorry, sounds about right, I've paid $8k NZ for me and 2 ds's to fly budget through Korea this July. 1 adult and 2 children.

I remember the scariest thing I found out when living in Australia was how much it cost to get out again (back to the UK, in my case).

Fortunately we had return tickets from the UK. I'd love to live out there but I'd always want either the return part of a ticket or a massive stash in the bank to get back to the UK in an emergency.

And I always thought we got ripped off travelling out of the UK

It used to be cheaper to go anywhere via Frankfurt.

MrsJohnCusack · 11/04/2008 01:19

sounds about right TBH
hence why we haven't been back to the UK yet and don't look like doing so any time soon...

That sounds about right to me too and I think it is fab!! Means we can't afford to go back and visit the in-laws for a very long time!!

Sibble · 11/04/2008 02:47

lol superloopy. dh uses that as an excuse not to come back with me and stay with my parents.

I've just bought tickets on Cathay Pacific for two adults and two children for $8000 including comprehensive travel insurance. I'm really pleased with that price and Cathay are a good reputable airline.
We went through FlightCentre

we flew out with etihad airways last trip price was really competitive and to be honest they were really quite good. Movies were ok. staff were helpfull. didnt loose baggage, food was a bit hit and miss but i was pregnant so not the best judge. previoulsy flown mostly with singapore who are awesome but etihad were not far off. Better than gulf at any rate that we tried once....

Yep, afraid that's about right, cheapest deals I've seen recently are with Emirates, for around $1850 pp. We would love to go back to visit friends in UK and family in South Africa, but neither are realistic, with 2 children, unless you have 2 full time salaries, and even then it would be a stretch. Hard to justify the better part of $10-15k on a holiday, when we have a mortgage that could go towards.
I can't believe the cost of flying to Auckland from Brisbane though, it's a 3hr flight and it's hard to find flights for much less than $2k for the 4 of us
