Relocation to Cayman islands

My husband and I are considering relocating to the cayman islands. DH works for an investment bank with a long commute and long hours. We currently have one DD 4 years old and one baby due in June. Has anyone had any experience of this and if so whats it really like. Schools, healthcare and quality of life are the most important issues. I am also a nurse so could potentially work as well. Any advice would be appreciated.

No advice just hoping you have a spare room! No pressure you understand!

Swop you for Nairobi

There are some expat websites that can help you find others already there to ask questions etc. I'm not sure what they are but I'm sure someone else will come along and point you in their direction. Enjoy

Thanks for the tip!

I used to live in Jamaica and visited the Cayman's once. Great if you love diving but VERY small - I guess everyone would know everything about everyone. I don't know too much about things like healthcare and schooling but there is a fairly large expat community there so I would assume not too bad - probably medi-vacs to Miami for major medical emergencies. Also you are very vulnerable to hurricanes - as seen by the devestation caused by Ivan a few years ago.

If I were you I would visit before making any decisions. It's small and a long way from anywhere - suits some people but not others.

Good luck whatever you decide!

Somebody I used to work with now lives in the Cayman Islands, her husband is something to do with banking, and she has 2 kids (4 and 6 year old) and one on the way. Dont speak to her much, but she loves her life, hurricanes are a worry and she always flys back to the UK when it looks like one is coming her way. There is a huge expat community there and from what I can gather she doesnt really mix with the locals that much.

fairylights · 11/04/2008 16:47

a friend of ours moved there last year as her dh is a banking type person, think they are loving it but they don't have kids yet. Sure i could put you in touch with her if you would like that, she is a very lovely friendly person! Just let me know..

I don't think there are any MNers there but you could come onto the All those in the US thread - there are MNers in Bermuda, British Virgin Islands and Trinidad.

We all know about relocating in general.

imopop I found something useful for you here whilst I was reading the Expat Telegraph.

I have friends who've lived in the Caymens with kids... They certainly enjoyed it, but sold up a little while ago because of the hurricanes - the last time the Island took the burnt, their house was destroyed....

Nice lifestyle though!

imopop · 15/04/2008 19:23

Cameroonmama-Thanks very useful. Youcannotbeserious- do you know when the last hurricane was?

Muat've been 3 years ago they came back to the UK... Not sure if the Caymans has been hit since though?
