Driving in the US

I tried asking this on one of the threads in the travel section but got no answers. so trying here!
What sort of licence do I need to drive in the US in July when we go to Texas? Dh has a German licence - one of those new ones like a credit card with a photo on and mine is still a UK one on pink paper, no photo. (Are they still the norm in UK?) Am I or dh going to have to get any special documents to hire a car and drive over there?

You should look into an international drivers license.

The old type UK driver's licence is fine.

admylin · 29/02/2008 15:53

Thanks, that explains it all. Dh can go and sort himself out with one of the international licences. We're in Germany so I might have to exchange my British licemce for a German one which would be even more paper work - and I like my little pink, folded licence, don't want a plastic card one.

Are you moving to the US or just visiting for a while. I come from California, so don't know the Texas driving laws at all, I think each state has it's own criteria. Anyway, if you're just visiting, then a current driving license and passport should be fine. If you're moving there, then check out the rules. You should be able to find them out in any "Moving to Texas" type guide book found on Amazon. They should be able to tell you the rules. When we moved here from Calif. the book I got said that I had 1 year to get my British driving license. I've still kept up my California license, but my DH hasn't. He hasn't had any problems using his British one though.

We might be moving there but in July we're just going to check it out and take a look.

If you are just visiting you can use your British passport.

LilRedWG · 29/02/2008 16:08

passport Driving licence! Doh!

admylin · 29/02/2008 16:12

LilRed will I be able to drive without geting an international one then? Dh can get one anyway but would be handy if I could drive too, wouldn't mind trying one of those 4 or 5 lane highways out!

Think there is a time limit on exchanging your British licence for a German one admylin, unless the rules have changed. After you've been here a certain time, think they demand that you resit the test. Maybe you could get an international one next time you're in the UK?

www.dallascvb.com/visitors/visitor_resources/

here's the Dallas tourist site admylin. Maybe you can mail them and ask, or the car hire firm on there. Maybe order the visitor's package.

We got one from sent from the Wisconscin site and it had a lot of great tips in there, very helpful I thought. Lovely looking area, we have it in mind for a longer summer visit one year.
