My mother (early 80s) is originally Australian but has lived in UK for last 50 years or so. She is moving back to Australia this year, mainly to live near me and my family. Does anyone have experience of an elderly parent moving over, and how did it work out? Thanks

Bumping for you - my mum moved from Devon to Surrey when she was 93, and that was definitely a mixed experience. She struggled to make friends, but loved being near me and being more accessible for wider friends and family to visit. I did have to provide a lot of support and care but it massively improved her security, mental and physical health and aspects of her quality of life, and being one mile away in a crisis rather than 200 was definitely a big advantage.

My aunt in law did similarly, and it worked beautifully. But she was still lively and active, and her family was very large and very family oriented. So she had loads of visitors and was naturally part of family life without being a drain or a big responsibility for anyone..

Goodness. Will she be eligible for medicare etc?

If she has a UK pension, get a specialist accountant to talk you through it.
