Moving to Dublin?

whattodo235 · 20/08/2023 17:33

hoping for some advice - my husband has just been offered a job in Dublin. It’s a good offer but we are looking at overall quality of life for us and our 3 young children - one in primary. Anyone done this? Thoughts on what it’s like/if you’d recommend/nice areas to live/good schools (state or private, preferably secular unless the religious ones are much better?)
(I’m hoping I’ll be able to transfer there with work too, or find similar there)
thanks all!

@Passerillage - I would have to politely disagree with your comment about the city or Dublin in general not being very cycling friendly.
Cycle lanes have been popping up left, right and centre, since the pandemic and they are trying to build a cycle lane from Howth to Dun Laoghaire (like the Dart line) through Fairview and Clontarf. There are LOADS of cycle lanes all over the place. It's very bike friendly - to the detriment (in my opinion) of keeping the rest of the traffic moving as sometimes bus lanes have to merge back in to the general traffic and it really slows things down.

Last thing from me today is if you could afford to rent, you would be able to afford to buy (based on the rental figures I'm seeing in these posts). Would your DH's company assist with a mortgage application? You could sell your house if you needed to in a few years time.

Passerillage · 21/08/2023 17:12

@LookItsMeAgain Fair enough - I know I'm nervous cycling in traffic. College Green just feels a bit murderous to me! I live in the UK now and the city I live in has very limited traffic in the city centre and it feels fairly safe, but when we lived in London I refused to cycle (see above: nervous in traffic).

I think yes buying would be a better option as rent is so high but we’d have to move there first realistically and rent for the first year to check we like it there/find the right house I think
thanks so much for everyone taking time to write on here
ill post on craicnet too

I lived in Dublin from 1995-2007; rented in Rathgar to start with then bought in Cabra, moved to Finglas (West - v. important to mention that!) and ended up in Swords. Probably got it arse about face but I much preferred the Northside 😀

I lived in Swords from 2002-2007, Sandycove before that. Married a Northsider but he was trainable...(only joking 😄)

MontyCCU · 22/08/2023 11:15

I'm slightly envious of you OP. I do miss home and I've no family there now so don't go back much. Wishing you all the very best.

We went to Dublin for a concert and for 4 slices of pizza and 4 drinks it was 54.00, its so expensive. Beautiful pizza but unreasonable prices

The rental market is awful. Awful. I am southside (and stuck here due to work) but we rented recently and it was a total nightmare. Not sure if it is any easier now or better on the northside. We ended up finding a short term let (1-2 years) so hoping we will find something to buy.

Everyone I know who rents here (this is not just a recent thing - talking about last 10/20 years) ends up moving constantly. Unless you get social housing the private rental market is just not stable. But at least you could find reasonably priced rentals before a year or two back, now it is just a nightmare. We got ONE response from an estate agent in about 6 months of looking, aothough it is true we were looking in small area. If you are not too picky about area you should be ok. But see what sort of responses you get from Estate agents on daft, that should give you an idea of current climate. If you are just looking short term it may be easier, that is my experience. If planning to try and get a local mortgage talk to the banks now to make sure you are filling any criteria.

There are lots of nice areas on the northside although I haven't lived there. I agree live on an estate or side road, we have lived on main roads and they are awful for social reasons.

Look into educate together schools for schools. Most people I know are very happy with them.

Healthcare is ok, in some ways better than NHS from what I hear. We have private insurance (VHI) and we get refunded GP visits, physios, specialists etc.

It's pretty easy to get a GP appointment although lots of practices are full and not taking new patients. But once you get refused by three practices the HSE will force one of them to take you.

If you are sick or goivng birth Irish nurses and midwives are the best. 😍

🤣 I think they broke the mould when they made him.

I would recommend looking for a house in Ashbourne. It's technically co Meath but only a few minutes from the airport

Good shout.
You drive down the N2/M2 motorway at 120kph and you'd be at the airport in about half an hour.

whattodo235 · 22/08/2023 19:56

as a bucket list of things that would be amazing to have:

  • strong sense of community
  • great primaries and secondary options
  • good access to outdoors and kid friendly activities
  • Easy walking distance to overpriced coffee shops and lots of restaurants (preferably less overpriced)
  • a Georgian rectory to live in

You'll need to be working in Ireland for a year before banks will consider a mortgage unfortunately. Good luck with the rental search.

A 4 bed s/d also in Ashbourne:

Hi @whattodo235 I live in north county Dublin and love it. easy commute for your DH to airport area. I live rurally between the areas of Ashbourne, Ballyboughal and Naul. I am ten mins drive from Donabate which has a huge park with country house ( Newbridge Park) and lovely beach. Also about 25 mins drive from Malahide with its park, house and beach but I much prefer Donabate beach. For Sat lunch we go to Newbarn Farm near Ashbourne and the Greenery in Malahide. I love the area. So close to everything and close to airport which is near for you to go home to visit people or collect people. I think you would have a good chance of finding a decent rental in Donabate or Rush and you can explore other areas from here. If you ended up somewhere like Donabate there is a great WhatsApp group you can ask any mammy about and they can add you!

ToEllewithIt · 22/08/2023 20:29

Do you have boys / girls / a mix? Most secondary schools are single sex and some areas will be stronger on one than the other.

Come the back roads in through swords and you will be quicker
@whattodo235 check out Ashbourne it has everything that you are looking for

Radyward · 22/08/2023 20:42

I absolutely love Malahide- its on the Dart train line to the city and is soo cutesy / posh/ at the sea/ lots of fab restaurants. Id love to live there . Like a villagey feel - this is from me going to the odd concert in Malahide Castle 😆
A friend lives in Clontarf- also lovely close to city.
Ashbourne so close to Dublin is nice
Skerries ??
Glasnevin super expensive rentals tho.
To echo others dont go southside if you need close to airport. It only takes a crash/ breakdown on the M50 to mess up your day

If you go towards Malahide there is an Educate Together Secondary school. Or a private option Sutton Park. Both are co-education.

LookItsMeAgain · 23/08/2023 10:20

Your husband's company should be able to help you in relation to finding schools for your kids.

If there are any that you want feedback on, feel free to drop me a DM/private message if you like. I'll do my best to find out a bit about it for you.

whattodo235 · 14/09/2023 12:26

This is super helpful - thanks so much!
