France - the joy of the fournitures scolaires list

And its that time of year again.

Another massive list of textbooks and cahiers (specific sizes and number of pages) with specific cover colours to buy. As well as all the usual pens etc.

We've just had DS2s list for CM1 (he's 9 turning 10 next year). EIGHT textbooks (manuels). Ten cahiers! Loads of pens and papers and paint. And bizarrely two pencil sharpeners.

Oh and a precision about the type of compass to have (I'm ignoring that one - he's dyspraxic and will continue with the one we have).

Anyway, Ive managed to do all the major things by going to 3 shops in 2 different towns (no internet delivery where we are). And by raiding our supply store. Annoyingly we have lots of A4 cahiers but this year the school only wants "grand format".

Not yet got the list for 5eme. But we're leaving on holiday Sunday for 7 weeks so hoping it comes before then....

What random things have you had on your lists?

We’ve used Scoleo, my boys collège was set up with it. It’s not the cheapest but you can modify your basket to remove the things you have at home, so it’s not like you have to take the whole list.

Never heard of a Lutin! It’s called a porte-vue round here.

my two are going into 1ere and 4eme this year and I confess I haven’t even looked at their lists, they’ve sorted them out themselves and they get the student-approved versions e.g. those four-colour pens, which teachers dislike and students love!

DiDonk · 26/08/2023 10:40

Mine love the four colour BIC. Have you seen they now come in wood and metallic?

Should be on all the fourniture lists!

KatharinaRosalie · 26/08/2023 15:50

Should be on all the fourniture lists

They are on ours. Why would some teachers have an issue with them?

ForthegracegoI · 26/08/2023 17:04

@KatharinaRosalie

DS tells me they get stolen / argued over (especially the metallic / wooden / special edition ones) and the teachers get fed up refereeing 🤷‍♀️

My oldest is going into GS and I only have to provide pencils, pens, and rubbers so far.
But what are stylo ardoise? I have to provide 10 of them.

ForthegracegoI · 26/08/2023 17:55

stylo Ardoise = white board pens, usually small / fine ones. They usually come with s mini whiteboard.

DanceWithYourBalloon · 26/08/2023 18:23

Thanks. All I kept coming up with was slate boards. 😂
I'll look in Action or Bureau Valley.

LaChatte · 26/08/2023 19:18

As has already been said they're white board pens (small format), 10 sounds like quite a lot though!
I had 6èmes this year. 100% of arguments involved stylos 4 couleurs 😵.

InvincibleInvisibility · 27/08/2023 00:17

Surely all pens are labelled??? 😂

We have had teachers insisting on Bic 4 couleurs. Others insisting on individual pens.

As for stylo velleda- DS1 got through at least 7 or 8 every year in maternelle (he presses really hard and they did a LOT of writing). So when he was in CP and DS2 in PS I cunningly bought a massive box to make it cheaper. Yup, 6 years later it still isn't finished !

I've got two younger children still to come up through Maternelle, so a bulk buy might be a good shout!

KatharinaRosalie · 27/08/2023 08:16

If your school also insist on Frixion pens then those I would definitely buy in bulk, we go through a ton. They are rechargeable but pens themselves are quite fragile and keep breaking.

I was laughing about this with dd the other day. The non-existent formats that seemed to be required. I remember a red file tray being required and we could only find a deep pink one. And the huge vat of plimsolls in the supermarket where you could always find one in the right size and colour but the other remained elusive for what seemed liked hours. We were on our way to Ikea to buy stuff for Uni. Oh for a few cahiers and pens!
