Should I be annoyed?

Or am I unreasonable?

A friend from home, who we have invited multiple times to come and stay whenever he liked, is coming over to stay in the country soon for a week. As it happens, he's staying about two hours away from where we live, in an expensive hotel. He's asked when we're going to see him. There are five of us so we'd need to take two cars or spend ££££ to stay in the hotel or nearby. All the kids are either back at school in the week he's here or over staying with us during their own holidays from Uni in the UK and DH and I both have full time, full-on jobs. So we asked him to come here and we could all go out for the day. He could also stay over with us. Apparently the travel over to see us would be too stressful.

The upshot is, we won't be seeing him. I feel both really bad about it and really annoyed. Mostly really annoyed though. Have any of you had this happen and what did you do?

Do you all have to go? And if you do, can't you fit 5 people in the car? It's only 2 hours away - I thought that was nothing in Australia!
It's not a lot anyway to see a friend you haven't seen in a long time, and probably won't have the opportunity to see in another long time.

Can you and DH get a day off, or see the friend on a weekend?

I think YAB just a little bit U.

Can't you meet for lunch half way?
