11 Plus exam registration and moving back

Hi all

I am in a bit of a conundrum. We are a family of four currently in Asia for over 8 years. DS is in yr 4 and DD is in yr 2. Both are in a reasonably good International school with good teachers and the school follows the British National Curriculum. Both DS and DD are exposed to many cultures and are having a great time in school.

DH is in a reasonably stable job, although he seems think it is mind bogglingly boring.
DH has been going on about moving the family back to the UK , mainly to ensure that DS is enrolled in a grammar school and subsequebntly DD as well. We have a home in Sevenoaks area and there are a number of good primary schools within our catchment area and also secondary grammars in Tonbridge and I believe another grammar annex has opened up nearby.

We are planning to tutor DS via online tutors for the 11 plus. I am looking through the eleven plus forum for some recommendations. There are number of worries that I have which DH seems to be overlooking , would be ever so grateful if the more knowledgeable mums could provide some advice:

  1. DS would take the 11 plus exam in Kent. Is it possible to register for the exam if we are still overseas? to register for the 11 plus , do we have to be in the UK physically AND enrolled in a school in the UK? I wrote to the Kent LEA but was advised to check back within a year but we need to plan ahead.
  2. The plan now is to return in the summer after DS completes Y5 and DD completes Y3. So they have time to settle in. Only problem here is that , most probably in year admissions to primary schools might be a challenge so we are gearing up for a few years of private school as well. Has anyone had any experience with in year admissions?
  3. Between Barton Court, Judd School and Simon Langton for Boys, would any be able to give insights to these schools?

Thanks ever so much!

What is your back up plan if you don't get grammar places? I don't know the Kent area but being bright doesn't mean it's done and dusted. Anyone can have an off day. Unfortunately you only get one chance at it.

11+ exams are early in year 6 and registration is often earlier. It might be worth returning a little earlier.

Kent Test registration is usually between 1 June-1 July in Y5. I don't think you have to be resident in the UK (you definitely don't have to be resident in Kent) but you should check with KCC. The test is in the first week back at school in the September of Y6.

Barton Court and Simon Langton are hardly convenient for Sevenoaks - are you thinking of moving towards Canterbury? Would be a hell of a school run otherwise!
