Germany - how often is your nanny sick?

Just that really. Our nanny called in sick again today. That makes around 20 days this year, normally at short notice (as in, two hours before she's due to arrive: she starts mid-afternoon) and normally for coughs and colds, according to what she tells me. It's driving me mad and making me fall behind on my work, to say nothing of the fact we've essentially paid a month's salary for nothing, but I've noticed that Germans seem to be a lot quicker to cancel plans etc for 'sickness' than in England, so maybe it's normal and to be expected...? Our nanny in England took three days off over two years... Are we being taken for fools or do we need to suck it up?

Does she get sick pay?

ricepolo · 05/12/2022 17:14

Yes - if it's under 3 days or more than 3 days with a doctor's note (which she always gets - the last one referred to a 'cold').

Well if she didn't get sick pay only SSP she may be able to cope working when she isn't 100%.

Most nanny's have to be notably unwell to call in sick!

SSP? Do you mean Krankengeld? We are in Germany...

Hiya, I'm German. It's a lot and imo she takes the mick. 20 days! Look around and find someone reliable.

DH is German and while I hate to stereotype I do see a bit of hypochondria amongst him and friends and family

I'm not even German, but fame on to say this exact same thing.

Get rid!
