Transferring schools mid year in France.

I was wondering what the law is regarding changing schools mid year in France. DS is in a private catholic school and he doesn't really like it and I cannot see what the benefits are in paying that bit extra, so would like him to transfer to a state school, I don't want to make a big drama with the current school, so I wondered how I could do this?

Ask at the local Mairie. They handle the first step in state school enrollments. The next step goes via the directeur/trice of the school itself
