So I got back from holiday this week and I really , really didn’t want to come home. if I won the lottery I would definitely move abroad.
So just being nosey, if you could move abroad tomorrow, where would you like to live?

Somewhere near Bordeaux

maranella · 03/11/2022 16:56

I don't want to live abroad, but I really would quite like to have a house or a flat somewhere sunny where I could spend 1 Nov - 28 Feb each year. Sicily would be lovely, or Seville, or the Canaries. I hate the dark and gloom of British winter.

psychomath · 04/11/2022 07:53

If it has to be somewhere I could realistically move to with my life as it is now (visa issues aside) then either Israel or Vietnam, but if this is a fantasy scenario where money is no issue then I'd love to live in Iceland. Although I think I might struggle with it being dark for months in winter, so maybe I'd migrate to Vietnam from November to February!

If we’re day dreaming about top location it’s actually big house and garden central-ish London

But if it has to be o/s I’d go where family is Aus but I wouldn’t leave my dc even if stilts and they are happy are so maybe not

MarshaBradyo · 04/11/2022 07:59

I’d do as pp and just have a holiday house too and the London one

I lived between France and England for fifteen years. Loved France in many ways, but England is ultimately more efficiently run, has fewer financial problems and a more equal attitude to life for everyone.

i know that no one on here will believe me.

I've lived in France and I completely disagree!

Dreikanter · 04/11/2022 08:26

Northern Portugal or NW Spain. Would need to see what the winter would be like first (I’m thinking chilly and damp).

Or Bayonne in France.

Copenhagen would be nice, but given that we did the sums on living there whilst we were working (on a good salary) then no way could we afford to retire there.

Chateaudiaries · 04/11/2022 08:42

Dh is Dutch so Netherlands, probably in the the south around Maastricht in about 3 years. Our dc will hopefully end up near there, once schooling finished in uk (one dc about to start uni in Munich). We are currently buying a property in south of France for all of us.

Hooverphobe · 04/11/2022 08:45

Maastricht is horrendously expensive and you’d probably get the vapours at heerlen or kerkrade.

Hoppinggreen · 04/11/2022 08:46

Bavaria
A town called Erding

losingit31 · 05/11/2022 15:54

I live in the middle east at present and have property in Gibraltar (rented out). I'd spend winters in Gib, live between London/south Devon and Gib and then spend parts of spring/autumn in Italy.

I read a book called 'The Year of Living Danishly' which was a good insight into becoming accustomed to life there - but the author was in Billund so there wasn't much going on.

Chateaudiaries · 05/11/2022 16:04

Okay I guess you know best 🙄 hoover but I also know it well because my in-laws live there.

If money no object, I’d choose the Cayman Islands or somewhere similar in the Caribbean for the climate. However as we are not in that position it’s just a dream. We are however, currently looking at the possibility of a move to BC, Canada. OH has the opportunity of work there as his particular line of work is sought after and he has been in talks with an employer who can hire from overseas. Planning a recce trip right now. 😁

Crikeyalmighty · 11/11/2022 12:57

@losingit31 we lived in Copenhagen for 20 months- lovely lifestyle if you don't mind British type weather- a bit more sun maybe and a bit more snow. Expensive for some things but high standards and easy trips to Sweden over bridge.

We always wanted to move to Greece but in reality it’s quite a poor country and very little to do in the winter months. I don’t want my illusion spoilt so will happily keep it as my no1 holiday destination.

I’d love to live in a European city like Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen or Berlin.

Chuckle94 · 14/11/2022 22:23

@2ndMrsdeWinter wow there’s where I would love to live too! I love Greece, but you’re right. I bet it’s very boring in winter

We’ve à home in the Pyrenees, and it’s where we’ll end up when we stop working.

So jealous. If you rent it out, please PM me. Love that area.

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 15/11/2022 07:58

Somewhere warm and sunny… anywhere… I’d live in a shack if I had to just to get some sunshine 😭.

It’s where I grew up, and I’ve inherited it, so it’ll always in some way be “home”, and no, it’s still just to be used by us when we take the children back to see where maman is from.

I'd move between Sri Lanka, East coast/southern India and Kenya. Sri Lanka and India for the food and culture, very low cost of living and Kenya because it is a beautiful magical country. But this is during retirement, none of those places are feasible when working with kids unless I got a relocation package with work which is never going to happen.
