DD1 is taking a year out from Uni, has her visa and is moving over in a few weeks time. She's travelling with her partner, he has his visa and job lined up too.

They're starting off staying with relatives and working for a white before they go travelling OR the company they're being employed by have offered to move their jobs as they travel.

Anyway - from this side, the rental market seems to be hellish. We can't seem to find anything suitable at all so they're in her Aunt's for the first wee while then a budget hotel for a few weeks after in the hope that once they have feet on the ground and meet some new people it might be easier to secure a spot.

If anyone might have some pointers to FB groups or websites that we haven't exhausted, I'd be very grateful.

Not from Perth, but rentals are hellish all over the country. Rent is high, demand insane, lots of people living in tents and caravans.

Good grief. This is awful.

I cannot understand why they're handing out free visas and have companies saying they're desperate for staff if there is nowhere for anyone to live.

Not overly soothing to hear as a mother but reassuring that it's not just her. Thank you.

Not sure how helpful this is but when I work in Australia years ago I stayed in a (nice) backpacker hostel.

Slightly different situation, but when we moved our sponsor organised a 12 month rental for us (we paid the rent) before we got here.

Can her partner's employer offer something similar?

We've been looking at those but the one nearest her work won't even reply to tell us if/when they have availability........

They're only 19 so it's not a highly skilled employment situation. They're going to work for a hospitality company which has venues all over Australia, they've offered to put them in touch with people locally and if worst comes to the worst highly discounted rates in their venues.

As PP said, it’s really hard here at the moment. Complete lack of rental stock all over the country but some places worse than others, and rent is sky high due to the shortage. As you say it’s a real catch 22 as hospitality is crying out for people but there is nowhere for them to stay. I heard about a guy running a cafe who moved out of his home and in with relatives and gave his home over to his 3 casual staff as the only alternative was shutting his business.

We've just emailed the company they landed jobs with to see if they can provide any more clarity regards the situation.

It all just sounds awful.

You can look here but the market is extremely tight. I wish your family the very best.

As previous poster said I also lived in a lovely backpacker's house in WA years ago when I stopped to work there. That backpackers has been bulldozed now but I would think there are some other nice ones. It was very common to do. Private room, shared facilities.

ChocoChocoLatte · 07/11/2022 17:38

thank you @TheSandgroper I'll give it a look. @Redup we've looked at them all but they're either full or won't accept couples. They'll just have to get their feet on the ground and start meeting people once they're out there!
