DH wants to lease a 4x4... I'm not sure what I want except for big enough for family of 4 + oodles of space in the boot, and of course cheapish to run. What's better priced 'down there'... petrol or diesel?

blimey! not sure about leasing just know that if it is anthing like car hire a 4wd will be expensive! We have two 4wd's although we live in bris not sydney. both expensive to run compared to a car, but cheaper than in the uk, fuel is about half the price, services are reasonable and we will have horses again soon so need to tow and found the 7 seats great when we have visitors.
diesel is more expensive than petrol just like in the uk, however will put better miles in. petrol cars are cheaper to buy than diesel so we bought petrol. we have found cars cheaper to buy here and although we have bought two older 4wd's have been impressed with the way they run and have had no problems. we did hire an outlander when we first arrived and loved it, rented through thrifty, cheaper if you dont rent for the airport but go into town. still seems expensive way of getting around. we also found we needed two cars as we dont live in a big town, we have one IGA but will need to drive to school etc. Weather not always sunny or the extreme too sunny to walk for miles!
not sure if that is any help just our experience.....

thanks chloeb2002, I'm not really that keen on a 4x4 but haven't had time yet to do my research as I'm organising everything else... whereas dh has already found the motorbike he wants and looking into cars (funny that as he doesn't drive cars...)

you do get most of the same cars here as in the uk. oh and servicing in cheaper here too. just had the explorer serviced and it only cost$100. hope you find what you are looking for. some times the car hire centres are a good place to look for types of cars.
