At 2:46pm, March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake hit the east coast of Japan, followed by a tsunami, which devastated vast areas.

More than 18,000 died because of this disaster, and many survivors were not able to return to their former homes.

The whole of Japan will be remembering today with a minute of silence at 2:46pm.

Indeed a tragic event. The enormity of the event, the death toll and then the clear up afterwards were on a scale like nothing else I have experienced.

I was living in Tokyo at the time, and even there, several hundred km from the epicentre, this was by some margin the largest earthquake I experienced in my 10 years there.

In remembrance. Thanks
