Came to france in April and had DD in Sept. It has been challenging cos of language and have hardly made any friends as we've had so many visitors at w/ends and language barrier. We were due back in UK in Feb but DH has just been offered an awesome job (but no extra pay) in Rochester, NY in America. I have no idea what to do or think? Was getting excited about moving back home with DD and getting back to friends but is this an opportunity not to miss? (hhmm)

Do you like lots of snow?

expatinscotland · 31/10/2007 15:59

the idea of moving back to the US for any reason at all completely chills me to the core.

i'd stay in France.

I have lived in both countries and am now in US. I would definitely consider going to Rochester, the common langauge makes a huge difference. Friends and family can visit and on the whole there is more for them to do in the US when they do. Yes, it is an opportunity not to miss IMO. Go for it!

Upstate NY is FAB, I went to uni there (in Ithaca). It does snow a lot, but you get good summers.

Go for it, it's an opportunity!

I'm in Germany and we're waiting to see if dh gets offered a job in Texas which he applied for. He goes to meet the group leader over the Christmas holidays. The dc want to go and I want out of Germany (language and schooling are only 2 of the many problems) but on the other hand I'm really scared about the distance, the new climate and starting over. It's not easy is it? Justthe thought of packing all our books is a nightmare!

God - the idea of packing!!!!!!!!

DO NOT EVER EVER PACK YOURSELF!

I am here to tell you - because I have moved a lot - that it is better to live on lentils for a year. Spend your money and pay movers to pack. I moved from UK to US with entire house contents and lots of books and it was easy-peasy. They came in and did it all in a day. One day. I did nothing at all apart from flog my electrical stuff to my neighbours.

(The other end with US customs was not so good but that's beside the point.)

Go for it, the moving is easy, international movers will also do all your forms. Sit back, pour a glass of wine and watch them get busy with the bubble wrap.

My dh reckons we should somehow post all the books and kids most treasured toys and just buy all the rest new when over there and it should come to about the same price as shipping ourold stuff . Must admit he isn't really on our planet most of the time (mad scientist) and can easily go to the supermarket to buy a couple of things and come out 80 Euro gone!So his idea of an easy move and mine are totally different - my idea would be something more along the lines of your move chocchipcookie.

Ilovenutella · 02/11/2007 10:25

LOL at mad scientist........ Prob would go for packing service - we have since decided that we would only go with an 'ex-pat package' where we get loads paid for....... we shall see?! (hhmm)

When you pack for the US, you will need extensive lists of every single thing you have packed and it's value. I think if you're only going for a year, I would put the stuff in storage and travel light, buying what you need over there.

admylin · 02/11/2007 10:41

I once added it all up, to buy the basics from Ikea (ie beds, table, chairs, desks and sofas and the kitchen utensil and bathroom stuff) it did actually come to around the same as a shipping it all would cost! Still, couldn't get rid of all the kids toys and all our books.
(Hi SSSandy, I emailed you by the way!)
