Has anyone experience of living in mainland China? Could be a possibility for my other half, not sure that I would want to relocate at the moment

Only visited but did like Chengdu a lot.
Moreso than Beijing or Shanghai.

It is more relaxed and friendly. Lots of rooftop gardens so it seemed greener despite being a large city.

Try and get a visit before deciding if you can live there.

I live in mainland China and have been here for over 11 years.
Despite the user name, I do not live in Shanghai, but a second tier city. What do you want to know?

Update - yes he is definitely going, have been away and lots to think about.

  • buying fruit and veg, is there plenty of choice
  • hygiene, need to buy bottled water?
  • internet use, I know that google etc is banned, how easy is it to use a VPN - this would be for Netflix etc

Plenty of choice of fruit and veg.
Bottled water only - I would not drink the tap water - most people have the big water cooler bottles at home for drinking and cooking
Internet - lots of sites are banned, but it's easy to use a VPN although they do get blocked on a regular basis, particularly if there are international conferences of a specific holiday such as National Holiday on 1st October

Thankyou for your response, looking forward to seeing panda's and different culture

Air quality isn't great there. It is one of the few places that DH wouldn't move to despite having regular travel there. ( he does like the pandas though)
