Lower salary for same job after relocation

My DP lives abroad, works remotely from home and is hoping to join me here in the UK later this year. Thinking of doing a relocation with his current job but they have now told him that his salary here would be less, because it's cheaper to live here. He's annoyed and showed them several job adverts for similar roles here that are a similar salary to what he's currently getting.

Is this common? Is there anyway round it? He doesn't actually know what figure they're going to offer yet, just that it's "less". But he already struggles where he is due to cost of living (despite being on what is, to me, a good salary) and is angry that they're wanting to pay him less for doing the same role just because he'd be living in a cheaper country.

All he can do is negotiate. It's completely normal to be paid a salary relevant to the country and market where he is living

That's what I suspected. Hopefully something can be worked out.

Can he work remotely from your house rather than his current house?

But, yes, totally normal for there to be an adjustment in salary dependant on living costs in the country.
