Doha

I have a friend in her 50s who is going to Doha very soon to take up a health care job (professional), apparently at an elite uni sports facility.

Anyone with any insight? I think it's fascinating that she's doing it. It seems like quite an adventure!

What's life in Doha like?

I might yet join her (apart from the human rights record...)

Its a beautiful, peaceful city. The traffic is a bit mad and it's hot in the summer but it really is a very special city. We went to the museum of Islamic art this morning (free) and absolutely beautifulfollowed by lunch in a vegan cafe and then a walk to see the horses in the souq. A lot depends on your employer, housing and salary but generally speaking it's a great place. Especially if you dont have children needing a school run! Noissue with single women, at least half of the engineers I work with are female. Nobody cares.

We are considering a move there so this is great to hear! @jasmineallenestate I’m trying to find out more about what it’s like to live there, are there any particular schools/areas to live that you’d recommend?

Depends on ages. Doha English Speaking School, Doha College and Sherborne are the main choices but there are lots of good schools like Compass, Cambridge etc. Living wise l, choose what fits with you. Pearl if you want to feel normal amd walk the dig and grab a coffee, Beverley Hills if you like compound life. There are loads of good realtors here who can show you a variety of houses.

Thank you so much @jasmineallenrealestate Our children are 3 years (turned 3 in February) and 16 months. Where would you say would be best/possible for nursery/school? My husband keeps saying Al Waab looks ok, is that any good? We also came across a compound called Les Roses where I liked the look of the pool and little playground/modern look of the inside of the villas... Do you like living there? Would you recommend it? Thank you so much for your help - really appreciate it.

Al Waab is new but the roads are ok. Les Roses is older and leafy

When we moved to Doha, we used Kimberly Clarkson. Been in and out for years so not sure if she is still there but she was really good at finding schools and villas for us

There's 3 different les roses compounds so I guess it depends which one as nearest nurseries/schools would be different depending on what number you're looking at.

Also yes I would say al waab/aspire area is good to live in and there's quite a few schools and nurseries in the area but I think it's definitely worth having a look around all the compounds you're interested in when you visit as people probably want different things from where they live. Will also depend on your accommodation allowance/budget I guess. In the area there's aspire park which is nice for the kids in the cooler months and there's soft plays in Hyatt plaza.

My friend isn't really enjoying it. She'll give it a year. But, on £7000 take home a month.... as a HCP who'd be on £3000, tops, back in the UK... she's giving it time!

She's finding it boring, both the work (standards 10 years behind the UK), and socially.
