Posting here as I’m guessing someone might have more experience going back and forth.
Any advice for carriers or flight times please?

Are you flying first, business, PE or coach?

If you are going direct, you have a choice of BA, Cathay or Virgin. I’ve rarely done Virgin, but the other two are usually fine. If you are going to do a lot of back and forth, you may decide to stick to an airline so you get tier points, but that’s a whole other topic ☺️

If you are willing to do a stopover, Qatar and Finnair are affordable options, with business class sometimes half the price of Cathay/BA. But I’ve missed connections with both airlines due to delays. Spending an extra day in Qatar wasn’t much fun.

skyscanner is a good website to see what options you have. I would avoid any stopover in Beijing or Shanghai because of the high risk of flight delays and missed connections. I also wouldn’t fly China Eastern as it’s got a dodgy safety record.

. Looking for cheapest but in reality I probably need quickest so direct flights.
Helpful stopover advice, thank you.

Hi - I used to live in HK and as manikoutai said it depends on which class you are flying.

We did a mixture of both. for direct flights we used to fly BA or Virgin. The other option we did was Emirates via Dubai, as they went directly to Glasgow (rather than having to change at LHR) - the A380 economy was still spacious and if you fly business with them their lounge in Dubai is amazing.

If you have family and are flying business BA have the pods which we found good as it meant we were altogether rather than in single rows....

I’ve flown with Cathay before to HKG. They were ok. BA are fine so are Virgin. The only flights I have done to and from HKG have been night flights.

Direct: BA usually cheaper than Cathay.
