Relocating to Wellington

Kai ora to the NZ mumsnet posse!

We've been in Auckland for a long time and there is a good chance DH may need to relocate to Welly soon.

We love Auckland but it's probably a once in a lifetime job.

So what do we need to know? Can anyone recommend some suburbs? We'd like to be central but live by the beach atm and would miss it dreadfully. Our house budget would be about $1mn. We have one DD who is in Year 4 so want a decent school.

Any tips would be very welcome.

Wellington is such a fab place to live. I would look at Island Bay, Lyall Bay, Miramar and you might even sneak into Seatoun. Realistically most places in Wellington are a short drive to the beach.

Thanks Fantail. Lyall Bay looks nice. There don't seem to be many houses on the market though - is it very seasonal down in Welly? THe market in Auckland seems to be very quiet.

Yes, the market is always quiet in winter. It should start picking up by October.

That's good to hear. There seems to be a lot of very ropey looking properties on the market at the moment. I'm hoping they are the ones that tend to hang around as they have issues or the owners are unrealistic!

I'm using homes.co.nz . Trademe and Barfoot are the main websites in Auckland. Any suggestions on the best sites for Welly?
