oh sorry, this is about a sportsmatch isn't it?

I really must brush up on this kind of banter before I apply for my citizenship

sandcastles · 23/05/2007 04:19

Lol...suzywong, it got me too....really need to 'up' my Aussie knowledge!

ghosty · 23/05/2007 04:20

What's Victoria then? All they seem to play here is that AFL which I don't understand (but verrrrry nice to watch [letch])

sandcastles · 23/05/2007 04:27

Ghosty, I can't even watch it for that reason....bores me to tears!

ghosty · 23/05/2007 04:28

Not those perfectly honed/toned upper arms sandy? [drool]
I know why the Melbourne women love their footy ...

twentypence · 23/05/2007 04:33

ghosty · 23/05/2007 04:36

sandcastles · 23/05/2007 04:37

I know, Ghosty....but I can't see them for love nor money....

I try....but I can't do it....

eidsvold · 23/05/2007 04:43

yes - rugby league - started years ago as a means of letting players play for their state - see it used to be the NSW rugby league and all the good players from QLd were co opted to NSW teams - so they were able to be selected for the state where they played their first a-grade match.

Aussie rules - my grandma is a diehard Collingwood fan. sandy - don't worry about the rules - just enjoy the view!!

btw - I am a cane toad - you southerners ( not you ghosty that is too far south ) are cockroaches.

sandcastles · 23/05/2007 04:47

Can I watch it with the sound down, do you think?

So all I see is the "perfectly honed/toned upper arms"....

Hmmm, could be an option!

ghosty · 23/05/2007 04:48

One of my shiney new friends is an Essendon fan ... she says that her whole family would cry if they lost

ghosty · 23/05/2007 04:50

I find that, when DH and DS are watching it, trying to work out the rules etc, if I do the ironing and glance up now and again, it makes ironing a much more pleasant experience

eidsvold · 23/05/2007 05:00

better if your dh and ds go and see a game live - amazing thing to see!! I saw melbourne v nth melbourne at the MCG - great!!

Dh has - as part of his cultural immersion been to all codes - started with league then union, then ventured to a Brisbane Lions game ( still none the wiser about AFL) and then to a soccer game. Says AFl is definitely better live.

ghosty - many years ago - my grandma took my dad ( her SIL) to see collingwood play. A player on the opposition team did something amazing and dh applauded - an older lady sitting behind him hit my dad with her brolly for daring to compliment the opposition!!

up here we call aussie rules - aerial ping pong.

scully · 23/05/2007 05:12

Of course Queensland will win tonight
and I lived in Melbourne for almost 3 yrs and am still none the wiser about AFL, back in the days when the Brisbane Bears were sitting at the bottom of the ladder, and Melbourne didn't have their own NRL team

eidsvold · 23/05/2007 05:20

gosh scully did they have elctricity then too

dh got some naff banner thing out of the alpha magazine that says go maroons and wanted to put it in the car - like hell I said - I am the mug driving this car round day in day out!! So he put it on dd2's bedroom window - she loves it!!

Having said that dd2 begged to wear her england rugby union shirt to visit my mum the other day!! am sure it is just he novelty that dd1 can no longer wear it but it fits dd2 just right.

Ghosty....the ironing idea could work...

eidsvold · 23/05/2007 10:57

it was a tradition for me to do my ironing whilst watching the game - state of origin that is - made the time go quick and I got the ironing done - oh for single days - now it would take the three games together to get the ironing done and still not be finished.

dh is setting up in the play/rumpus room to watch downstairs so I can watch what I like up here if I don't want to watch.

up the maroons!!

ewww we won - seems the cockies are very quiet at the moment where are all the new south welshmen??

OP posts:
robinpud · 24/05/2007 05:28

Eidsvold- I have given up trying to work out the sport here. All I know is that ds plays soccer now not football. As for AFL and RFL I am completely lost. Dh watched the whole game which left me alone with Dr House..
Are there more of these games? Are they important in some way....

eidsvold · 24/05/2007 06:58

started in 1980 - best of three games. State pride is on the line.

Originally Australian rugby league was NSW rugby league and that was the only teams in the comp - gradually spread to allow other states - mainly QLD and VIC to join.

So all good rugby players from QLD were drafted into NSW teams. Concept was players could be selected to play for the state in which they first played A-grade rugby league. QLDers were pleased to see all those fab players we lost to NSW able to represent their state.

State pride is on the line - esp where QLD is concerned cause NSW think they are the bees knees and hate us cane toads so we love to stick it up them any opportunity we get

hope that sort of explains it.

eidsvold · 24/05/2007 06:59

as it stands - QLD has won more games in the history of State of ORigin - so we like that too.
