Is Torrevieja safe?

I know that this doesn't relate to permananet overseas life but I thought I would ask those who really know ....

We have booked an appartment in Torrevieja for a week in the next few weeks and last night I had a look on a few websites for reviews and I was pretty upset by what I found. There are quite a few reviews saying that peopele have been robbed in their beds, that pick pocketing is rife, cars have their windscreens smashed and that cars get stopped and hijacked.

I always take reviews with a pinch of salt but the frequency of such reports is worrying me. I am pregnant and travelling with a 2 year old and whilst my dh and I have travelled accross south africa, things change when you have kids.

Please can someone tell me that I am being silly, that these are fairly isolated incidents and that we will have a nice time!

Any recommendations for places to visit would be much appreciated.

Burglary is pretty common (my uncle and FIL both have houses near there) and I wouldn't be surprised to know that pickpocketing is common as well. But I haven't heard that violent crime is a serious problem.

We went on holiday 2 years ago just outside(villamartin) and went into Torreieja a few times at night. We had no trouble at all- it's a typical evening in Spain with lots of people strolling along the waterfront, stalls selling food, restuarants, strett market, hair braiders, sketch artists, great sand carvings. When we driving back it was very dark and tbh the outskirts did look pretty ropey BUT no problems. Never felt uncomfortable walking around. However as in any busy place, I am always aware of my bag, didn't have a lot on us re cards or stuff. Dh and dd would wonder off whilst I had ds in the buggy and was fine. Just be sensible and enjoy your break.

Now trying to remember where we visited to help you
