Hi all. Used to be a regular on MN when I lived in London but since moving back to NZ have found it harder to make the connections due to all the brits being asleep when us down under are online! So if anyone is keen to start a thread for those of us in this predicament please reply! My DD has just turned 5 and started school last week (scary). Have just found out I'm expecting number 2 - due roughly Xmas day...

I was a pre-school teacher for the last 6 years but don't plan to go back to it - I think it had passed its sell-by date for me. Was quite physically tiring while pg too - lugging small children into cots and high chairs - that's why I finished at 29 weeks. Hope to just stay at home with 1 (instead of working with 20!) for a while, then maybe do something else when I return to work.

I still enjoyed it but don't think I want to do it for the next 5/10/whatever years. Though everyone tells me at least I have lots of experience of looking after babies now - though I won't get to hand this one back at 5.30!

Shells · 01/10/2007 19:46

I had great news last night. Spurred on by a friend and Buzzybee I called round the MWs again in the vain hope that someone would take me on, and someone did! A space had come up for her. She sounds great and really supportive I'm going to see her next week. I feel so relieved. I'll still have issues with the hospital I imagine, but if I've got a decent MW behind me it will make all the difference. Dh, god love him, is rather useless at these things.

AnnainNZ · 01/10/2007 23:40

Good stuff Shells - snything that makes you feel happier and more relaxed about the birth has to be good.

buzzybee · 02/10/2007 08:09

Wow Shells that's great!! Well done
I think you'll be fine now going to see the consultant. Fore-warned is hopefully fore-armed? And with the MW on your side the balance of power shifts slightly? Where is your MW based? Will she come to your house? Mine comes over in the evenings, which is lovely suits both her and me. She is so great about letting DD put the gel on my bump and listen to her heartbeat etc.

Shells · 03/10/2007 22:15

I know, I feel so much better. I have said I'll go to their rooms as its only in Newtown - very close to me, and I can take DS2 (DS1 will be at school). If I'm not well she'll come to me. So thats all fine. 1st hurdle overcome.
Have either of you got heartburn?

AnnainNZ · 04/10/2007 08:20

Have had heartburn on and off since about 20 wks. More of an annoyance than anything else - it's not that bad. My dr gave me a prescription for 300 indigestion tablets to last me for the whole pg and to stop me spending a fortune at the pharmacy!

buzzybee · 04/10/2007 09:11

Shells, when is you actual due date? Are you a Dec (like me!) or a Nov (like Anna!). Reason I ask is I wondered whether you have joined one of the Ante-Natal Clubs threads. The Dec one I'm on here gets anything up to 100 posts per day and is great for supporting you through the trials and tribulations of pregnancy. I think almost everyone on there is feeling very "uncomfy" at the moment with various aches - some are still suffering from morning sickness...

OP posts:
Shells · 04/10/2007 22:49

Hi, due date is 6th december. so could be either i guess, but i haven't been massively early before so probably won't be this time either. like the idea of the indigestion tablets on prescription. i am spending SO much money.
and i haven't joined the thread as i thought i would just be too late now. will i?

AnnainNZ · 04/10/2007 23:33

No you won't be too late to join, people are still joining the November thread and some of us (like me!) are due in 4 weeks. It is really nice to have a chat with other people who are at the same stage as you. Nov thread getting v chatty at the moment as lots of people are going on maternity leave.

Due in 4 weeks - I can't quite believe it - still doesn't seem real!

welliemum · 04/10/2007 23:54

Sorry to butt in - wow- this thread is (almost!) making me feel broody.

We had a fabulous MW for both babies - she lives near us and came to our house but her office is in Newtown so maybe it's the same practice as you Shells!

Anyway, she did all the antenatal care and came to the house whilst I was in labour, then we all went to wgtn hospital (my choice) where she delivered the babies. It was all very calm and under control. As soon as the paperwork was done we were out of the door and back home - really a good experience both times.

When the weather gets a bit better (touches wood), does anyone fancy a meetup at the bot gardens or somewhere? Obviously somewhere which doesn't involve walking miles!

Shells · 05/10/2007 05:22

yes, i'm definitely up for a wellington meet up. ds2 is a runner, so preferably enclosed playground, or somewhere i can push buggy easily would be great for me.
anna - only 4 weeks to go. how exciting.

buzzybee · 05/10/2007 06:20

Hi Wellinemum! Yep count me in too! The Zoo maybe? 20/21 October would work for me.

Shells, new people join those threads all the time and everyone is REALLY welcoming. As Anna says it is great to be able to interact with other people at the same stage and realise you are not alone in your various aches, pains, worries etc. Some people due around the end of the month post to both threads I've noticed!

OP posts:
welliemum · 05/10/2007 10:44

Yay! 20/21 October is good for me and I think the Zoo is a great idea.

Shells · 06/10/2007 00:48

20th better for me. Couldn't bring DS2 to the zoo - I would just have to chase him, but could leave him home with dad and bring DS1 maybe?

buzzybee · 06/10/2007 03:53

Hi Shells. Tell us works best for you. If you are OK with leaving him at home? Or if you'd rather suggest somewhere else? I can't think of any fully escape-proof playgrounds but maybe you know somewhere that works? 20th is fine for me.

OP posts:
welliemum · 06/10/2007 08:19

Shells, would ds2 sit in the buggy to go round the zoo?

Otherwise, what/where would suit you best? Happy to fit in with any plans.

Shells · 07/10/2007 00:51

Aren't you all nice. I don't think he would sit in buggy. Would be furious with me! But I can easily leave him at home. How old are your kids Welliemum?

buzzybee · 07/10/2007 05:19

Shells, I think Welliemum's DDs are about 3 and 1 (sorry if I've got that wrong !) and my DD is 5.5. If you're really OK with leaving DS2 at home shall we say meet at the Zoo 11am on Saturday 20th October? Shall we post a new thread as well just in case others like Zoe and KJaysmum aren't checking this one? I wonder if KayBeeandZak have arrived here yet?

Yes, great idea. Would be nice to have a gang. 11am sounds good. My DS1 is 6 so hopefully he can chat to your DD.

buzzybee · 08/10/2007 09:30

Great. OK for you Welliemum?

OP posts:
welliemum · 08/10/2007 09:57

Great! And spot on buzzybee: dd1 has just turned 3 and dd2 is 15 months.

Hope the others you mentioned can make it too!

poppynic · 08/10/2007 10:14

Hi. Just "eye-dropping" on your conversation as I was supposed to be returning back to Wellington this month and now have to wait another year - am feeling very homesick.....
Just want to put a plug in for my consultant obs. to Shells - if you are not entirely happy with the new midwife, I saw John Tait for my first baby. Apparently he has a bit of a bad reputation with some midwives for being arrogant etc etc but I felt absolutely, entirely, totally safe with him. He's hugely experienced and can apparently do a cs in 2 or 3 mins. You can book him just to turn up for the birth, and I think you have one consultation before that? (Or you can see him for the whole pregnancy - but it's a bit late for you by now.) I had shoulder dystocia with first birth but I had no idea there was any trouble coz he dealt with it so calmly. I really missed not having him over here for second birth but managed to survive anyway .

Shells · 08/10/2007 19:47

Thanks Poppynic. Thats really reassuring. I'm meeting the MW tomorrow so we'll see what happens.

buzzybee · 09/10/2007 10:45

Shells, how did you get on with the MW today - any good? Got my fingers crossed for you!
