No but it is in my plans for when I retire! Currently trying out different islands to see which one I want, although I think I already know deep down!
If you have a specific island in mind why don't you check out various fb forums for each one? There are loads on there and lots of locals and ex pats with great info.

Sorry, no help, but it sounds wonderful. I hope you find the right place.

A bit more information is needed here. How long are you looking to stay away? Is it for work or for a long holiday? Are you looking to travel around or stay in 1 place? What type of places are you looking for (large-ish town, village, countryside)? What do you and your DH like to do? And so on. Thank you.

worked in Greece for some years, summer only. Lovely. You do realise how cool and quiet it is over winter?

PaxUniversalis · 06/12/2017 12:53

specialsubject - yes, that is correct. I know of a seaside village that is very touristy during the summer months but out of season only about 40-50 locals live there and you can only get the bare essentials then as most local shops are closed in the winter.

There are some small, bustling non-touristy towns nearby but they are a 20 to 30-minute drive away. Actually the small, non-touristy towns (usually located inland, not by the sea) are a better option if you're planning to stay long term because they cater to local people all year round.

Been to various Greek islands over the years and being a member of a few relevant Facebook groups, I'd say it would depend on the island. Some get quite cut off due to high seas and wind in the winter and as a result shops run out of fresh produce and electricity can be intermittent some days. But these things might not bother you! Personally unless you want to go native, I'd choose a town, I love Corfu town, or somewhere like Chania in Crete. But you might prefer a tumble down cottage down a track! Exciting plans though!
