Finally decided it is something I could look more into, and have just found out through online score checking that I don't think we would qualify

Although my dh has a very good job, (retail manager) I Don't think it is classed as skilled and we didn't have enough points.

I was really starting to come round to the idea.

There has been a rush of these threads lately (maybe the weather!) and it seems what you need to do is go and get yourself one of the skills on the list by going to tech.

bouncy · 10/02/2007 19:55

yes the weather is definately one of the reasons we are considering it.

Does anyone know of a website that lists the skilled jobs, as the ones I have found through google have not really helped.

Bouncy - find out which trades are most in demand (hgv driver, plumber, builder, gardener, nurse) and re-train for that skill. There seems to be a huge shortage of skilled tradesmen in the western world at present. You could also try getting a job before you go though this won't be easy. Don't give up though. IMO it is better to regret doing something than regret not doing something.

Skilled occupations list

Migration Occupations in Demand List or MODL - you get extra points for being on this list

Retail manager is not on the list, retraining into a trade might be the quickest route. Would have to train to a certain standard though, check out Australian Skills Recognition Information and Trades Recognition Australia

Hope all these links work!

bouncy - theres a similar thread going in the living overseas section and I suggested to the poster there to visit the website www.britishexpats.com, lots of advice and forums on there about which visa to apply for as well as forums about different occupations. You might find it helpful!

how many MNers are planning to emigrate to Aus? There must be at least 10?

Harrogatemum · 11/02/2007 12:48

Suzy - it must be because of the show that has just been on BBC1 for the last month - called "Wanted Down Under" about skilled people going to an Aussie city for a week wth their families to test the lifestyle, work and homes they could afford. Funnily enough lots of them were surprised when they couldnt upgrade from their 2 bedroom terraces to 5 bedroom mansions with pools!

Harrogatemum · 11/02/2007 12:52

BTW when I say that I dont mean thats why people on here are going, just that there seems to have been a surge of interest in emigration! There are loads of new people on the forum I go on on British Expats too who are now keen to look into the viability of migration.

sunnywong · 11/02/2007 12:53

ah, well that does explain it, how are you getting on btw?

Harrogatemum · 11/02/2007 13:31

good thanks - baby Maddy is now 10 weeks old and nearly sleeping through! Unbelievable when you consider the DTs didnt until 4 months....

Just sent off for all the kids Aussie citizenship this week......apparently doesnt take long for them to come back, then its the challenge of going down to London to sort their passports out!
