Lets have a new thread the other was getting a bit long!

All expats are welcome, I come from Perth WA and have been here for 8 years, married a pom and live in West London with my ds1 2yrs and ds2 1yr. No plans to move back to Oz but we are thinking of moving to Singapore for a couple of years. Well the weathers got to be better than here, and it will be further away from the inlaws

G'day mate. LOL sorry just had to throw that one in the hat. As Quokka said we just don't do must Aussie Slang any more. It all sounds a bit weird now.....

I am an Aussie Mum living in London and have been here 7 years. We are in Teddington at the moment but spent most of our time in Ealing. I am from Rockhampton, Qld and DH is also an Aussie. We were married before we left Oz. I have a DS age 9 mths. I am a SAHM and loving it.

Hey guys,

DH and I have been here 2.5 years, bought a place in Putney. Originally from Perth but lived in Melbourne for 9 years before moving here. DH is a Melbourne boy and I'm having my first baby here - due May 27th. Very suprised there aren't more Aussies online - I thought half of Australia was in London

Hi folks, DH and I are Aussies, but we are living far away from all you Londoners! We are in Derby, in the Midlands. I have DD 2.8 and DS 11 months and am a SAHM. We plan to be here another 18 months approx, then travel a bit, then home to beloved Sydney.

O2BMe - I was born and bred in Rockhampton. We moved from Rocky to Brisbane 4 years ago. Small world really.

Quokka dh is not a web designer. I am a bit to admit I don't really know what he does. I am technophobic. His current title is Senior Advisor - Field Services. He works for a govt department and maintains the network and servers and such. Don't know much else really.

I have no idea where. Please, please someone just tell us where to live. Too hard to choose from this side of the world. If we could focus on an area then I could look for schools etc. Have no idea where to start. West London has been recommended - but where in West London??? Or rather where to avoid I suppose?

We are really coming for the experience as dh's family is british. His mum lives in Australia (his dad has passed on) but all other rellies are in the UK. They are in Manchester area but we are not too keen to head there to live. Will be lovely to meet them but they are quite a lot older than us.

Would really love some tips on what to do and what not to do when we arrive from experienced aussie travellers.

mymama - what a small world it is!

Would love to ask you lots of Q's - we may know each other, but as we can't post names on this forum, I've sent you an email.

Are both you and your DH from Rocky? If you don't mind me asking but how old are you? I am 34 turning 35 this year. What school did you go to? What area of Rocky did you live in? I went to Glenmore (but don't hold that against me) and lived northside.

We left Rocky in 2000 to come over to London. Have only been back 3 times since and I really do not miss it. Will never go back there to live I'm afraid, it's just too small for me now.

In regards to where to live in London, I am a bit of a West London snob. Couldn't imagine why you would want to live anywhere else. I have lived in Nottinghill Gate (1yr), Ealing (5yrs) and now currently in Teddington (1yr). I haven't done the full research on schools but people have told me that the Teddington area has some great schools. We are very close to Bushy Park, not far from Richmond Park, there is no tube out this far but the other transport links by way of train and buses are great. Shopping is pretty good with a large shopping precinct at Kingston (5mins away), wonderful one off boutiques in Teddington High St, Richmond shopping is great as well and within easy reach as well as Twickenham.

Generally I would consider what's really important to you and your DH. Where will he be working? In the centre of London or on the outskirts and will it be Nth, Sth, Est or Wst? Will he want to drive to work or catch public transport (where he works can play a big part in this decision). The travel time getting to and from work can be a killer. You have no idea until you're here. Unlike Rocky where in 5 mins you can be anywhere you want to be or even Brissy you can easily be most places in half an hour. Here - taking an hour to get to work is very common and the traffic can be horrendous!

Also with accommodation you will get more for your money the further out you go but travel will cost more if you work in the city centre. I have also found the attitudes relax so much more the further out you move as well. It's not so hectic. If you have children it's great to be near some of the big parks or even if you don't have children. The parks are a great escape for some peace and fresh air. Richmond and Bushy Parks have deer freely wondering about the place and there are playgrounds, pounds, cycling paths and cafes etc to keep you occupied.

The one thing that is difficult to arrange once you're here in London is a bank account. Depending on who your employer is, they sometimes have an agreement with their own bank were they will refer you to them and the bank will open an account without a problem. If not it's a headache, no no, a migrane! I have friends who have had a build up of pay cheques but no account to bank them into and their AUD was dwindling very quickly to the point they had to borrow money off friends. I think HSBC is in Oz and you may be able to set something up there before you leave.

Oh I could ramble on forever. Let me know any other specific Q's and I'll try to answer them. There are a number of websites I could send you that may be helpful.

I still say 'your terrible muriel' my friends just don't get it. But I know more UK slang now as well.

Mymama what you have to decide is: do you want to live in a house or flat. remeber in london rent can be as high as £1000.00 p/month. So work out how much you think you can afford in rent and go from there. I have lived all over london - Marylebone, Earls Court, Tooting, my sister has lived in Hammersmith. I now live in Hertfordshire. just north of m25. If you look to the surrounding counties with good train links you can be in london in 40 min, it would take you that to travel on the tube inlondon to get to work.
And as I said on the other thread, contact the Local Authorities for lists of schools then you can email direct. I thought you were looking at Milton Keynes have you decided it is too far away?

I guess if you are coming for the experience then I would try london. Remember it is dirty and busy AND EXPENSIVE but at the same time exhillerating and wonderfull lots to see and do.

Maybe you need to try and find out how much your hubby can earn to work out your monthy budget. Also remember here- if you rent you have to pay council tax (rates), water, tv licence and utilities. + food. Im not trying to paint a dim picture but it is expensive in the UK.

Sorry for the long post i hope that helps.

Hello other aussies, it is half term lots of days out planned. Did everybody else get snow wasn't it exciting, Making snowmen and snow angels I love love the snow. Not bad for a brissy girl.

I love how in each State a beer is something different. Order a glass of beer in Perth and it's a middy, in Melbourne it's a pot, in Sydney it's a schooner....not sure about anywhere else

O2BMe I am 33 going on 34 this year. My dh is also Rocky born and bred. He is 37 going on 38. We both went to North Rocky high. I lived North side and he lived South side.

SunshineFairy we are still looking at MK area too. It is just so bloody hard to decide where. tbh I don't know if we would cope with London living. Brissy is just a big country "town" really.

dh will be looking for work in the next few months. We are v lucky that he will be on long service leave from his govt job here in Australia. So he will actually paid from his job here the whole time as well.

More aussie slang - sheila, bloke, barbie, wanker?

Hey quokka - make it sookie la la and it's even funnier

Good link - I think I've looked at that one before. I've lost count of the times I've had to explain to the Poms at work what a bogun is. They just don't have the equivalent over here so it takes some serious explaining.

I made a Pav for Australia Day but do you think I could find passionfruit of any description anywhere!! All i need is a little tin to stick on top of the cream with the strawberries and kiwi fruit. Making another one this weekend for a mates 30th - theme is Aussie of course. So will keep looking for the elusive passionfruit
