Hello. We're over here at the moment for a month visiting dh's folks and talking like we always do about how great it is in NZ and how it's definitely better for the kids. If we were to move to somewhere in/near Wellington where would you reccommend and why? thanks in advance for any replies (am on p-i-l computer so will have to check back intermittently).

Hi welshmum, and welcome!

I live near Wellington and I think it's a great city.

Where you live depends on what you're after, eg being close to the city centre vs having a big garden. If you have a lovely sea view you also have wind! It's all swings and roundabouts.

Rather than recommending this or that area, I suggest you borrow p-i-l's car and drive around and get a feel for the different places - it's very varied.

I don't like to put too much personal stuff here but you're very welcome to CAT me for more specific info.

Enjoy!

thanks welliemum.
I'll cat you as soon as I get a break from the family!
I've had a look at a few places - Khandallah, Eastbourne etc

Hi welshmum!

I lived in Wellington from age 4-23, so hopefully I know it quite well! Most suburbs are great for children - it would be other things that would sway you like the commute to work; public transport if you need it; schools, etc.

If you want to give more information on what you are looking for I will try to help!

Oh and my Mum is a primary school teacher so she is very good at knowing which are good/ bad schools!

Karori's had a makeover, new shops, new library, new cafes, v. cool. I like Karori.

I don't live there by the way so have no axe to grind Anniebear!

I find the toe surprisingly tender, but you need to boil it really vigorously to release the flavour

SSShakeTheChi · 07/02/2007 08:59

Welshmum, if you can, I'd go for the bays too, nice to have a sea view, although I can't say anything about the primary schools out that way. Do you have boys or girls?

I would probably base my decision on reasonable proximity to the secondary schools I wanted. However, if your dc are still very small, you may well be moving again before that becomes relevant.

ohh this is making me want a holiday

I have a friend who chose to move up the coast to Paraparaumu when she had her ds because she thought it was a nicer place to bring up dc. It's a fair drive into central Wellington if you're commuting though. Still, depends what you're used to.

Been wracking my brain in fact trying to conjure up memories of the place. Apart from the long stretch of beach, don't know much about it. Over to anniemac I think...

welliemum · 08/02/2007 09:43

eek, sorry anniemac!

oh yes I remember (vaguely) trips out to Paekakariki. Geez what's a bogan?!

Plimmerton yes I second that, and Whitby. Can't remember Paramata but we did go there a fair bit too. Know mum liked the place.

What kind of reputation does Kapiti College have anniemac?
