I'm an idiot- beds in Aus

DH and I are getting settled in Sydney, our container is about 4 weeks away with our gorgeous Warren Evans bed frame in it. I very, very stupidly didn't check the exact dimensions of UK vs AUS beds and going to buy a mattress today have realised our UK king bed frame is 3x3cms too small for an AUS queen mattress IKEA do a mattress which is 2x2cms larger than our frame and I'm tempted to buy that and shove the bloody thing in, or we'll have to custom order a mattress from a place in Padstow and pay through the nose. Third option is disposing of our bed frame and buying all new but I'm weirdly sentimental about it and really don't want to do this.
Anyone else done the same thing and just shoved an Aussie queen sized mattress into a UK King frame? There's a lip all the way around otherwise we'd just let it overhang.

Ah how annoying. Might not work with a coil/spring mattress but a memory foam type one should squish a bit?
The last mattress I bought was vacuum packed so you could easily take it home. Once unwrapped it just expanded to fit in the frame so might be easier than trying to squash a full size one?

We brought our king size and double beds over a few years back, and the mattresses we bought here fit fine, they're wooden frames, pretty standard beds. You need to get the right fitted sheet though as ours didn't stretch.

Pressure, did you have a lip around the edge of the bed that the mattress had to 'slot' into? DH is saying the 2cms won't work but I fail to see how we can't just squeeze it in! We only shipped one base sheet anyway so need to buy new bedding.

Fail our bed is 150x200 so two singles won't work either

bonjovi that's a great point, we actually bought a new IKEA mattress when we left the uk to leave in one of our guest rooms and I'd panicked I'd bought the wrong size as it took ages to puff up and fill the frame! Might be a pain changing the sheets but I can deal with that if the mattress is $500+ cheaper!

I had the same concerns - I have a frame that the mattress has to sit inside, frame from uk, bought mattress in Aus. But I squeezed it in - it will fit, it's just a tighter squeeze. Means changing the sheets is a bit more effort (as you have to lift the mattress out a bit each size when tucking the sheets under, as there's no spare room for hands between the mattress and the edge of the bed) but perfectly possible, honest.

Yes Fox thank you, that could be just the ticket (only just saw your reply as had the page open for ages before posting my previous response).

We'll see how we get on. Based on previous replies I think we might just wing it with an IKEA mattress. Unfortunately my body seems to hate anything other than a fairly firm pocket sprung- memory foam makes me wake up all night sweating buckets.

On a budget and very picky- you can imagine how fun I am to live with
