Is it right that children dont go to school until age 5? Is it just playgroups before that with Mums staying with their children?

children can attend kindergarten from the time they turn threeish. THen there is a form of preschool and then school at 5 turning six. Depending on what state you are going to live in depends on the ages.

If you do a search for the education dept in that state you should get the relevant info you need.

okay just seen your other thread - if in queensland - your child could attend a kindergarten from the time they are three and then around 5ish he would attend what is called prep - like full time school but more playbased. I linked to the education dept's website on your other thread.

Here is the kindergarten association.

here

there is also the playgroup association

hope that helps.
