To all the ladies in Aus - which are your fave clothes shops (in Aus obviously), are they cheap/expensive and can you shop online at ANY of them.....??

It depends what I want, haven't done MUCH shopping in Oz for clothes.

Kmart/Target & BigW do great casuals, not too expensive.

Katies, Rockman, Suzanne Grae for smarter clothes, bit more expensive.

These are, so far, the only shops I have used at the moment. Never tried online shopping for clothes, as I HAVE to try them on (at Katies I can get sizes 3 under what I am) so don't like that faff of ordering online then possible returning, iyswim.

eidsvold · 12/01/2007 11:39

exactly what sandcastles said. Bigw, k-mart are a little cheaper, then target and then the others although I find especially Suzanne Grae - do fab specials and I have bought some great clothes for next to nothing.

Myer and David Jones - upmarket clothes- do that for good going out clothes iyswim. For everything else - rockmans, suzanne grae and katies are great.

Underwear - get bras from Myer - professionally fitted - then fab undies by Bonds from K-mart and BigW.

Not sure if any of these are online. Luckily I have all those shops 5 minutes away from me - enjoy nosing around.

sandcastles · 12/01/2007 11:47

ohh, Eidsvold, you just answered a question that I haven't wanted to post!

Thanks!

CocoLoco · 12/01/2007 11:52

I bought loads of stuff in OJAY when I was in Aus...not the cheapest but it was all on sale. Doesn't look like you can shop online there though.

Harrogatemum · 12/01/2007 12:39

thanks ladies - I couldnt remember the names of any of the places I used to shop when I lived there for a year, but that was a good 11 years ago so I am sure there are some new names on the block!

Upmarket clothes - department stores (think selfridges but not as good) David Jones, Myers - selling shoes, clothes, underwear, accessories, makeup linen, electrical goods, lots of chain stores country road, witchery, esprit, portmans, general pants (jeans/tee shirts) katies, susans,
Cheaper clothes supre, rockman, susanne grae, just jeans.
then you have cheaper department/sell everything stores - target, kmart, BigW

and of course your independent designer stores selling australian and overseas designer clothes - scanlon & theodore, sass & bide, morrissy, alannah hill.

I believe they are selling off myer stores.
i love clothes sorry if there it too much information. Actually since i have been o/s I have appreciated Aussie designers and style more.

Harrogatemum · 12/01/2007 19:54

thanks sunshinefairy - I remember Portmans and Witchery and of course Country Road. And is there a shop called Cue? I think I bought a wedding outfit from there on one visit to Aus!

Whereabouts are you sunshinefairy - in the UK?

OP posts:
sunshinefairy · 12/01/2007 22:31

Oh yes Cue I forgot about that shop, good suits for work. I am in the UK but thinking about going home. thanks for asking.

skiwear · 12/01/2007 22:35

Country Road is good for work, and in the States too. Not sure if you can order on line for most places but if you have friends there they could get and post it to you. Things there will be cheap for us because of strong pound!) Happy shopping

eidsvold · 13/01/2007 08:32

sandcastles - my local myer is fab for fitting bras.

Harrogate - when you get here - go with SIL/sis ( can't remember which it is) and go to Chermside shopping centre - absolutely huge - just finished a huge extension - so kmart, target and all those other stores we mentioned should be there as well as other boutiquey kinds of stores, myer too...

sandcastles · 13/01/2007 08:36

Looks like a trip to the city then Eidsvold!

eidsvold · 13/01/2007 08:53

i imagine david jones would do it also but I have only ever done it at myer

100PerCentCod · 13/01/2007 09:10

My mate who moved to Sydney is bereft
NO GAP IN OZ

eidsvold · 13/01/2007 09:18

yup Cod - funny given all the other US stuff that has made it to our fair shores..... alas no Gap!!!

sandcastles · 13/01/2007 11:30

David Jones - City!

Although DH has informed me that there is a Myer's at a closer mall. So much better!

Harrogatemum · 13/01/2007 11:44

eids - yes have done the Chermside thing before - and Toombul, and Strathpine and Indooroopilly, am I forgetting any!!??

OP posts:
sunshinefairy · 13/01/2007 14:24

You've forgot Carindale, Garden City and the hyperdome. And of course the city they have totally revamped David Jones in the Mall, and youve got boutique shops in the valley and Elizabeth Street in the City.

Gap won't sell to australia because of the cost of opposite seasons. Shame really, I desperately missed Gap when I was at home, but can take it or leave here in the UK. Funny how you want what you can't get or find hard to get hold of. You can use GAP online if you have a USA mailing/billing address there is a company STS buying service you join and they send onto Australia or UK. Im sure there are other buying services. I hope that helps.

sunnywong · 13/01/2007 14:49

Hellooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!

Sunshinefairy, you mentioned Garden city - are you in Perth??????

Susan Grae is shite, it all falls apart after 2 washes

I got a VERY nice frock in Jane Lamerton in Meyer

but every time I go shopping I weep for H&M and Principles
Boooooohoooooooooooooooooooo

sunshinefairy · 13/01/2007 16:42

Hi sunnywong nope im in the UK, they were brisbane shopping centres' you know you can go through to one of those mailbox/postal places i mentioned below but for UK< then you can buy online and get it posted to australia you can buy principles online.
I believe perthies are very well dressed is that the case. I have never been to perth!

mogwai · 13/01/2007 18:03

blimmin eck

How fortuitous!

Have spend all afternoon packing to go to Sydney for 12 months and have deliberately left behind my Gap hoodie cos I figured there would be a Gap in Sydney.

I live in the flaming thing. Will have to find room in the case right this minute!

sunshinefairy · 13/01/2007 18:07

wow that was a close call you would have really missed it.

eidsvold · 13/01/2007 22:19

toombul seems to have gone downhill, strathpine is my local one. But Chermside I figured would be your best bet as it is just huge with so much in it now.

cori · 13/01/2007 22:32

There is a Cue in Kingston.

sunnywong · 14/01/2007 01:06

I worked at a super super swanky party last night (chef/caterer) and you should have SEEN the frocks there. MOst of them dollybirds with endless legs but even the old girls like me were very well turned out in alsorts of exquisite fabrics and prints. My waiters couldn't be arse, so it would have seemed, and were barechested and oiled. Tut.

eidsvold · 14/01/2007 06:43

at sunnywong - of course you were just professional and did not notice the chests until someone else pointed them out right!
