Budget for family of four moving to Munich?

DH has been offered a job in Munich. We are continuously being told the cost of living in Munich is lower than here, the quality of life is much higher but the figures we are finding aren't adding up to what we are being told. I understand that Munich is an expensive city and we are well used to watching our budget but we'd like to be able to afford a few nice things, a trip home once or twice a year without it crippling us financially.

While we would like an adventure, we don't want to find ourselves in deep trouble financially. He has been offered €70K. I am a SAHM with two young children. Neither of us speak German but he will be ok in work and we can/will both learn.

Neither of my children are yet in school so its good timing for us.......but I don't have any experience of the education system.

I have looked at Toytown but I'd really value hearing from some of you.

As others have said OP, uni is still free here and rather than saving for a uni fund, that 390 euro would really help you, otherwise you could well struggle. You need to make sure you have health insurance for everyone unless you are covered as family in your husband's contributions. You really ought to be a member of the rent association Mietverein with legal, think we pay 70euro a year. Plus you will need public liability insurance Haftpflichtversicherung that's 130euro a year. Dental/opticians will come under your health insurance but you will have extra contributions for white fillings/braces/contacts/glasses frames.
Unless your DHs firm will pay for a course for you (ours offered) then the local adult ed centre Bildungszentrum/VHS will be cheaper than the language schools for a course. Your kids will pick it up in kindy (costs 100 euro per child per month depending on hours attended and an extra 50 each for lunch). A gym class from the local school costs 30euro per half year. Swimming family tickets are cheap at 6 euro a time, annual passes more, as are posher swim complexes. Lots of extra curricular at primary where I am includes crafts, dance, sport etc
You really do need to check your warm and cold rents: if an offer looks too good it might be because heating is underestimated and you have a huge warm water bill in arrears, everything is a year behind and electric is separate for me: we do standing orders which go up accordingly.
I was like you re marriage but did it for the tax. So instead of 1 DH was 3. I could also then get a tax free 500 euro a month part-time job.
Winter clothing for my kids = what they normally have on. Bavarian winters have been much milder of late but I accept I am in the minority! Staring on public transport is a national pastime and being grannied is rife, especially when my kids like being barefoot so much. Fwiw although I am only there a couple of times a year I do like Munich.
I found it fairly easy to find a kindergarten place but I think the school system is hard to navigate: my middle one will be going at 6 and 3/4 because I have learnt from my eldest at 13 that leaving it as long as possible will help with the performance pressure, particularly with bilingual kids. My eldest made it to Gymnasium but I am tearing my hair out atm- Bavaria is hard. She would find the English system a doddle in comparison, particularly French, physics, maths. But that's a long way off for you.
Flights home: Ryanair to London come in cheapest when booked in advance.
Culture shock is a real thing especially if you are used to support from friends and family.
