Applying for a British passport from Spain with 'international birth certificate'

I'm interested in hearing any experiences of applying for a child's first British passport with the 'international birth certificate' (as opposed to the original Spanish birth certificate translated by a professional translator).

We were told at the registro civil that the international one would be sufficient but I've since read contradictory things - has anyone had their application denied because of this?
