Moving to Amsterdam Area

Hi all,

I hope someone who's recently moved to Amsterdam or surrounding areas can help.

DH has found a job in Amsterdam (Zuid) and I will probably work in the WTC when we move. We have 2 kids, a 3 year old and a 9 month old. DH is Dutch and has family in Hoofdoop and Haarlem so we want to live near them as well.

  • Can someone recommend a moving company from London to Amsterdam?
  • How do you begin to go around finding a good nursery and preschool? Because the kids are still small and their dad is Dutch, we're probably going to just with Dutch schools at this point.

Thanks in advance!

we're very good. We've used them twice for international moves.

Have a look for expat websites as they are very helpful.

Good luck with the move.

Look at the Amsterdam Mamas website. And join Amsterdam Mamas on Facebook. Invaluable. And immediately look into schools for your 3 year old as the lottery has just taken place for Amsterdam schools. Find out more re schooling on the Dutch Education Group ( Facebook also ). Good luck!

Definite the amsterdam mamas Facebook group. They're freakishly knowledgeable!

When would you move to Amsterdam? children start school when they are 4 here. You need to know where you would live in order to register and subsequently apply for the sofinumber and schools.
There are few schools near Zuid, everything depends on what type of education you want for your children. There are so many types of school in the Dutch system besides international schools in English and combination of Dutch and English.
After many relocation around the world and my husband's employers paying for everything 2 years ago i hired the removal people from Anyvan in the UK. They moved a 4 bedroom house items from London to here for a fraction of the money quoted by other companies. The negative part of it, I had to pack everything and label and number each box myself but 55 boxes of china arrived in perfect condition not to mention all the other items and furniture nothing went missing. Amsterdam is a very expensive place you will need every penny you have. Housing is dear as well as taxes and food not cheap either. just mentioning so you are not taking by surprise, good luck
