Should we cancel our trip? Argh!

Just read a big show storm is coming to the NY area on Monday and Tuesday. DH and I are meant to be flying from the UK to NYC/CT Wednesday to sort out things for our move over there.

What do you think the chances are flights will be cancelled? Should we cancel the trip ourselves? I'm a bit anxious as this is my first time overseas and have no idea what to do in this situation. Argh!

Don't cancel, if it's not safe to fly, the flight will be delayed anyway. Let the pilot decide.

Don't cancel. The storm is set to end by Tuesday night so by Wednesday, the roads will be clear again. That said, there is a chance there will be big power outs, so be ready for that.

Fannibal · 26/01/2015 05:57

I have a feeling flights will be really delayed. No idea how fast things get up and running again when it comes to snow in the US though.

I'd finally started getting excited for the trip too Sad (nervous flier)

They are used to snow storms in NY. Don't cancel unless actually you're having cold feet and looking for an excuse to anyway, or unless a delay will cause some kind of enormous problem (with childcare or similar).

Ememem84 · 26/01/2015 07:21

Don't cancel. I'd put money on it that if you do you'll have to either pay, or will lose money. I'm of the opinion that you always wait for airlines to cancel you. Then you can in most circumstances use travel insurance.

NYC and East coast us are used to snow storms. They'll cope well.

Fannibal · 26/01/2015 09:12

Ok thanks guys. I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

So disappointed and sad Sad .

Bear in mind that in the aftermath it will be tedious to look around. Do you have a relication/real estate agent waiting to show you around? Worth asking them.....

Fannibal · 26/01/2015 10:07

Yes someone was going to show us around.

Our flight has been cancelled though Sad

Not sure what will happen now.

Can't you reschedule? It's probably best. Not a great way to see the city and you don't want that reconnaissance trip to be totally off putting if it's your first time abroad!

Fannibal · 26/01/2015 11:53

Yes I think we'll reschedule, it's all being organised by DH's company so will have to wait and see what they say. I know it's for the best, I'd rather the first time I see where we'll be living not be the same time it looks like a frozen wasteland Grin

They've cancelled your Wednesday flight already? But it should be all over by Tuesday evening. That's bizarre!

If you can get another flight on Weds, personally I would still try and come out. This is the reality of winter here so it might be worth seeing it at its 'worst'. Although, it will also be spectacularly beautiful.

Isthiscorrect · 26/01/2015 18:30

It will be the backlog. Pretty sure I read somewhere that 1800 flights cancelled over the 2 days and 1700 to be rerouted. Far better to wait and visit when all the aftermath has settled down.
Good luck when you do go.

AuntieStella · 26/01/2015 19:38

And the BBC account of the latest emergency measures being put in place which includes some fairly drastic steps.

Fannibal · 27/01/2015 07:55

The airline website is now saying our flight is un-cancelled?

Any idea what I should do?

Nevermind, it seems like his company have cancelled our hotel reservations anyway. Think I will have to resign myself to not getting out there this week. Probably for the best!

Thanks all.
