SINGAPORE MUMS - POST HERE

Hello people - my best-mummy-mate will be landing on your doostep in about two months. Her hubby arrived this week. She and her family will be living in Singapore for at least the next two years while he works nice and hard to keep her in the manner to which I'd like to become accustomed Sadly, DH's line of work doesn't lend itself to relocations to the other side of the world.

Anyhow, please post here with advice and tips! Her hubby is apartment and school hunting at the moment so would be good to here your thoughts on this and more.

Cheers.

Hi Willow2,
I'm from Singapore, but living in the UK. Where is your friend going to live in Singapore?

singersgirl · 17/10/2006 22:42

I used to live there, but have been back in the UK for 2 years. Am happy to give advice based on my experience, if that's any good!

tootsieroll · 17/10/2006 22:51

I'll be going back in a month's time, for a month with my 6mth DS. Can't wait! Where did you stay when you were out there Singersgirl?

singersgirl · 17/10/2006 23:07

Lived off Holland Road/Coronation Road West. Jelita was our local Cold Storage. DS1 went to Tanglin Reception and Y1, DS2 went to Little Oaks Montessori off Farrar Road for a couple of terms - he was only little.

DS2 and I used to go to the mother and baby groups at St. George's (Tanglin), the Canadian School Mother and Child group and Centrestage drama on River Valley Road (DS1 did that too and I really miss it!). DS1 did Little Gym at Forum and also karate at our condo.

Feeling all nostalgic now. Would love to go to Indochine on Empress Quay and eat soft shell crab and Vietnamese rice wraps.

willow2 · 18/10/2006 00:31

Ha - I knew you guys were out there somewhere. Just been having dinner with said friend and bemoaning lack of response to this thread, so will alert her to your existence! TIA

Singersgirl,
drool I could eat all the soft shell crab in the world! It's really strange, because although I'm born and bred Singaporean, I feel like a tourist when I go back for holidays - there's always a new building or something everytime. Whereabouts are you now?

Willow2,
If your friend likes shopping, she will love Singapore. Apparently there's a huge mall recently opened, called Vivocity (and there are several other huge malls already in existence!).

willow2,
not sure when your friend is going to Sg, but I'm there from 17nov-15 dec, so if she needs someone to take her around or go for coffee, feel free to ask

oldnewmummy · 05/11/2006 07:41

Hi Willow

I'm currently living in Singapore, having been here for nearly 10 years (gulp)!

By all means get your friend to e-mail me on oldnewmummy at yahoo dot com dot sg. I'll be out of Singapore between 23/11 and 8/1, but I can perhaps answer specific queries (although probably not about child type issues as I'm currently a "pending" mummy). I can also link her up with Rojak, who's just moved here from Belfast.

Also, refer her to www.expatsingapore.com.sg. The Board Manager there has a habit of randomly deleting far too many things, but it is possible to get useful information on schools etc.

Rojak · 19/11/2006 01:19

Hi

I just spotted this thread. I've just moved to Singapore (early Oct) and have met up (in person)with oldnewmummy who I met on another thread.

We live on the east coast of Singapore and are really enjoying ourselves. We are close to the beach and park with good cycle and rollerblading paths.

Had given ourselves 6 months to a year to get settled etc and have been surprised at how quickly and easily we have settled.

Have met some other mothers in similar positions to ourselves, DHs at work or travelling a lot, mums who've had to give up careers to come here and some kids at school and other kids at home.

oh and there're M&S' here but no ready meals (but good for jam, biscuits, crisps, sweets and chocs!)

If she wants to post on here with some questions, I'll see if I can answer some of them.

oo exciting. we're relocating to singapore in jan! just been to have our siting visit, and it is indeed gorgeous! tell your friend to email me at simcla2000 at hotmail dot com. we've chosen tanglin for dd for sept when she will be old enough to go into nursery, meanwhile, whitelodge off dempsey road for preschool. living off chancery lane. having baby in march so lots to check out for that too! whoopppeeeee x

tootsieroll · 20/11/2006 11:03

Am in Singapore now - it's great, apart from the weather and the mozzies. I suppose baby changing facilities could be a little better, but the food more than makes up for it

egypt · 20/11/2006 13:25

what's wrong with the weather? too hot?

tootsieroll · 21/11/2006 00:27

Too hot and humid for me Although most places are air conditioned anyway, so that makes it more bearable

eldestgirl · 21/11/2006 02:29

Sorry, missed this first time around as was in UK on hols. Been in Sing for 5 years. Bit jaded and leaving next year (thank God) but happy to answer Q's.

aria21 · 21/11/2006 16:32

Tootsieroll...I'm from Singapore too. Havent been in UK long. Where you residing in UK?

oxocube · 22/11/2006 19:06

Hi eldestgirl. We're thinking of moving to Singapore next year as DH will be working there mostly. We are English but have lived in Holland for 5 years and in Switzerland for almost 5 years before that. I'm sure I'll have loads of questions for you very soon!
