Schools and where to live near Hürth, Cologne/Köln

We are considering a move to live near Cologne/Köln. My DH would be working in Hürth. We don't have a lot of money (no expat package) so I am looking at options for where to live and schools.

We have a large family aged btw 6 (Y2) and 16 (Y12).

Sorry, in case it isn't clear, I am looking for any experiences or advice on both aspects. Thanks Smile

Hello edpen

we live in the south of Cologne and have 2 kids.
I don't know Hurth that well, but we were there this week to go to the cinema, at the big shopping centre, Hurth Park.
Can either of you speak German? Do you want to be near other English speakers, or are you happy living in an area with mostly German families? Do you know how long you would be here for?

There are many family friendly areas in the south of Cologne- Rodenkirchen, Rondorf, Surth and Weiss, are all suburbs. Will you drive everywhere, or are you going to rely on trams? The trams are very good, I think the no 18 goes out to Hurth from Cologne centre.
There is a private English school in Rondorf, if that's what you're looking for.

Klettenberg is another nice area which is closer to the centre of Cologne, and not far from Hurth at all.
Our kids are still young, so can't really help with schools. We are currently applying for Grundschule for our little boy.

There's an English school south of Cologne, but a lot of Germans send their kids there so it's no so international. many people tend to prefer Bonn International School, which has a good reputation and offers the IB curriculum and a very international environment. A lot of families live in Bonn and commute to Cologne for work
