Moving to USA/Detroit

Hi all I'm hoping someone out there might be able to help us make a decision!

DH has been offered a posting to Detroit for 1+ years. We have two DC, 3 and 1. I would have to give up my well paid pt job here but would be able to work there, assuming I could find a job, though on a much lower salary almost certainly. Package being offered by DH's employers is open to negotiation (to an extent).

So what do we need to know/bear in mind/try and get the company to cover etc? What is the environment like out there for young families? Weather, schooling/childcare/activities etc? And what about the practicalities of day-to-day life versus what we are used to in the uk? Supermarkets and food? Driving/obtaining a licence? Anything else we really ought to bear in mind?

Neither of us have even been to Michigan (though before we signed on the dotted line we'd make it a condition that we went to a recce trip), so any advice you can give would be enormously helpful in making our decision!

Thank you.
