with school aged children who really didn't want to move? (I mean children who didn't want to move?)

How did it all pan out? How long did it take for your DCs to settle and be happy?

And do you ever get over the guilt?

Yes, me (and now back in UK). How old are your kids? It worked out well for mine. I would say it took about 6 months to settle (mine were 8 and 11 when we went).

Mine certainly didn't want to go to french schools. It's been fine. They settled in really well, almost immediately but they are at small schools in the sticks and the other children are very welcoming.

I don't feel guilty. I'm giving them a great opportunity: to speak another language fluently and experience life in a different country. It is challenging being in rural France though with older DCs. Not sure if that is what you are considering but it's worth thinking about if you are.
