Frequent trips home?

Do any of you do the splitting time between countries thing? I'm in the position of having to remain abroad in DCs best interests and not wanting to. Has anyone successfully managed to maintain some kind of life or contacts in the UK, with a view to moving back home permanently when possible?

Hi, I don't do this personally but I do have a very close friend here also an ex-pat who does this very well.

I think it depends on your income and circumstances.they kept their uk house, rent it out on a month to month rolling contract.

They rent a house here a very comfortable very large one to accommodate guests and give their dc a good lifestyle. Her Dh works from home but spends one week a month in a third country in the middle where they also have an apartment they rent.

She has lots of friends and siblings in the UK and her ds stayed in the UK and lodges with her parents.

The entire family spend the summer holidays in the UK as its too hot for them here and they go back for Xmas and extra weekend trips to see her son or for special events.

Her work here is very flexible. It's not for me but I admire how she does things in her situation.it must cost a fortune.

When we moved my inlaws were already here. They always said that you should commit to your new country and stick to it and now they feel like you too. Whilst I've not been back in years I do believe you can have the best of both worlds if that's what you want.

That's very interesting. I was under the impression there were tax implications if you are back in the UK. For more than 90 days. And as children grow older that affects them. Ds is September born so a long summer eats into the 90 days and then there were all the uni visits etc. we were very close to the 90 days.

Thanks for replies. There are tax implications, my aim is to be classed as tax resident in the UK by coming back as often as possible, but obviously without impacting the DCs and without having tax issues in the country I 'm living in. Bit of a conundrum at the moment

I've never considered that. I would have thought my friend is close to the 90 days but does break up the summer stint with trips to the 3rd country and another trip elsewhere so she's probably in the UK for 3 out of the 5 week trip in the summer.

When I first came here I thought I'd be going back a lot but our circumstances changed. At the start I stayed a uk resistant for tax reasons but now I don't have an income I wouldn't think they'd apply.

90 days is quite a long time if that is the rule though. Is that enough op? Could you try it for a year?
